Floppy Knights Review (HighDensityLipo)
Quick Description:
-Floppy Knights is a turn based strategy deckbuilder that takes inspiration from Advance Wars and has the art style of Dicey Dungeons. Advance Wars was one of my favorite games growing up, so Floppy Knights has been a game I've been looking forward to quite some time. This game looks awesome visually and pays tribute to one of the best turn based games ever made. I wish that the devs had taken a few more chances creatively, but that's my only real gripe b/c this is game is a ton of fun!
What's Good:
-The visual presentation is absolutely top tier! I love the art style, the charming characters, and the light hearted and fun loving tone of this game. The artist for Dicey Dungeons has outdone himself w/ the art direction in this game. This game could very well win some awards for best art design, that's how good everything looks visually.
-As great as this game looks, the reason ppl play turn based tactics games, is to be challenged and overcome adversity. Advance Wars was way ahead of it's time. Position was crucial in that game, and it's just as important here. The biggest mistakes are usually made before you even attack. You need to always be aware of where your opponent is, and how to position yourself in a way that gives you the biggest advantage. The deckbuilding elements adds another layer of challenge, variety, and keeps every battle feeling fresh.
-$20 is a steal for a game of this quality, the amount of content, and the replayability. It will take most players 10-15 hrs to complete the main campaign. Once you have done that, you can on the Challenge Mode which ramps up the difficulty on all of the levels. Mastering each deck is also quite a challenge, as every squad comes w/ it's own strengths and weaknesses.
-It's really easy to see everything on the screen and the devs have been quick to add QOL updates. There is now a button that speeds up the animations. I never had a problem figuring out my enemies movement capabilities, their health, and reading any information that was important for my squad. All of the objectives are clearly visible, and the whole game feels very fluid mechanically.
Could Use Some Changes:
-The biggest weakness of this game is that it doesn't take enough chances when it comes to how battles play out. Advance Wars will always hold a special place in my heart, but this genre has evolved a ton over the last 20 years. Most of the strategy in that game came down to perfect positioning which allowed you to attack them on the next turn, but kept the enemy just one tile away from being able to attack you, enemy prioritizing, killing enemy units as opposed to damaging multiple, and protecting your most important units. Floppy Knights plays out almost exactly the same, except cards now add more variety and volatility. Into the Breach has set the new standard for how turn based tactics games can add far more layers of strategy within every decision.
Consensus:
-Solid Game (Tier 3 and makes up 35% of my reviews). I have one major criticism for this game and that is it. Otherwise, this is a great game that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy. It pays homage to the classics, while creating a really unique hybrid between several beloved genres. It looks awesome visually, the soundtrack is great, and will challenge you every step of the way. This is a real treat for tactics or deckbuilding enthusiasts.
