Floppy Knights Review (DanTheTimid)
Let me start by saying, 12 hours in, I really love this game. It's challenging, interesting, and fun. It looks fantastic, have a simple if fun story with well written character dialogue, and while it is a genre mash up, ccg and advance wars, the result is something which feels wholly unique. Also, as a white man with a black wife and a bi-racial daughter with a disability, my daughter who watches me play seeing the main character is a bi-racial girl with a disability was really special as she rarely sees herself represented in games or media.
That said, there are a couple things to be aware of before purchasing. First, the art and story feel like they were designed with a younger audience in mind, yet the skill this game requires of its players is very much not in line with that of the average younger player. Heck, as a 39 year old man, even I'm finding the game extremely challenging (and from very early on). Now I like a good challenge, but it became clear very early on this was a game my daughter could only watch, not play herself, as its just too difficult. It's worth noting there are accessibility options on the main menu to make the game easier, bu the core mechanics of the game itself just feel like they're aimed at an older audience.
Second, this game does not allow mid-game saving, not even temporary saves that are deleted on boot up. I've talked to the devs about it and they've advised me based on how the game was designed, there's no real hope of that being implemented in the future. This means that when you sit down to play the game, you better be able to complete the whole level, as if real life gets in the way, you either have to leave the game running, or start all over again. Most levels aren't that long, but I've already had to redo long levels because real life called me away, and particularly on difficult levels you've already had to redo a few times because of losses, that can be very frustrating.
Overall: 9/10 - Looks great, sounds great, plays great. As long as the two caveats I mentioned don't scare you off, this game is worth you time. But buckle in cause boy is it ever hard.
