Final Fantasy XVI: Echoes of the Fallen Review (Laserfrog)
Echoes of the Fallen is incredibly short, somewhat story-lite, and because it cannot be accessed until the endgame of the campaign offers very little outside of a handful of gear and weapons that only serve to trivialize the final boss fight of the main game even further. Additionally, the DLC introduces probably the least likable non-villain character in the game, which considering the annoyance factor of some of the main game NPCs is quite saying something.
That said, Echoes is also an incredibly-focused dungeon crawl and boss rush, culminating in what is probably the best boss fight in the entire game. To be honest, the main game could have benefited greatly from being more like this DLC: a narrower, shorter experience that trims the pointless sidequests and unnecessary politics and worldbuilding to focus on the game's exceptional combat and over-the-top boss fights, while still delivering an effective story and meaningful lore updates. While I wouldn't want the entire game to be a 60-hour long linear corridor crawl (looking at you, FF13), there are definitely lessons about effective game design to be learned here.
Keep in mind you have to progress the main story all the way up until the end to access it, but if you do, I think this one is worth it. If you're on the fence, keep playing the main game until you get the option to go to a mission called "Origin", which is the final mission of the game, before you make your decision.
It is worth noting that the main game has notorious framerate drops in Fallen ruins, and the DLC cranks these performance issues up to 11. That said, it appears to be a memory issue primarily, so if you encounter serious slowdowns, save the game, exit, and then boot it back up, and this should fix it for a while. Worked for me anyway. It also wouldn't hurt to make sure FF16fix is installed, and to tune down the textures and fog effects a bit.
