FIFA 23 Review (rategod)
Of the news that will please some and some will knock their foreheads because of it, it should be mentioned that coach Ted Lasso and his team AFC Richmond have joined the game. Why is this a somewhat controversial addition? Of course, because both the coach and the club are completely fictional, made up for the hit Apple TV series.
Ted Lasso also appears in Ultimate Team, which, as usual, took the largest portion of innovation for itself. Because why bother with anything else when the online mode in which people spend real money on football player cards is making such profits?
The lovable, mustachioed American is certainly not the Ultimate Team's main draw. The change above the changes is a massive adjustment to the team play system, i.e. the rules according to which you can put together an effective eleven and then play with it against others. And again, it's a step that will suit someone, someone will stare at him incomprehensibly like Bobby Charlton at a red card.
Let's bounce back from the very basics: The new FIFA looks great again. If you sat my grandfather down in front of the TV, I'd bet you he wouldn't know the difference between a video game and an actual forball on TV for a precious moment. Everything works approximately as it should, no expense is spared on the visual processing of the players, nor the coaches, referees or spectators. It's next-gen.
The new episode also moves wonderfully. The players' movements are controlled by the second generation of HyperMotion technology, which already achieved good results last year and is even better this year. Football players are able to react smoothly to unpredictable events and ball bounces. The hand-to-hand fights look realistic, the goalkeepers' improvised interventions or unprecedentedly effective slides are perfectly processed.
A few solid improvements can't hide the fact that FIFA needs serious innovation.
FIFA 23, the last game with the famous name before the whole series is renamed EA Sports FC, is not as successful as the creators expected.
You can tell on and off the field that it is a new year, but unfortunately, this will tell you both some improvements and new, slightly incomprehensible failures. And over every slightly interesting idea that makes the Ultimate Team experience special, there hangs a shadow in the form of an almost unplayable career mode. 85%
