Fashion Police Squad Review (Uncle Cheese)
I'm recommending this game but it does have some issues to consider if you're interested in it.
The beginning of this game is great. The idea of being part of the fashion police and giving people a glow up to save the city from being ugly is unique. The levels are fairly well crafted. The enemies you encounter are diverse. The tools you are given to give people their glow up and interesting. To top it all off, the game isn't horribly long. Truly, I do appreciate everything this game tries to do even if ultimately I don't think it works after a certain point.
There are six weapons in the game and each one feels completely unique. Each enemy requires you to use a specific weapon, or sometimes weapons, in order to give them a make over. I like the idea in theory because it requires you to learn and adapt as you go along. I don't like it because of how the game will throw you in a tiny space with three or four enemy types, they're all attacking you, and trying to juggle weapon types while being mobile doesn't really work. Unless you're using the correct weapon you will do absolutely nothing to the enemy you are facing. When the enemies crowd in front of what you're shooting at you can see the problem. How frantic some of these encounters can get are like rooms in Doom Eternal. You're moving all over the place trying to do the right thing. In the beginning, you're thrown into these encounters in open spaces and it's not too bad to deal with. As the game goes on these arenas become smaller and smaller.
The weapons themselves also have issues. Every weapon, aside from the W.A.R.drobe, has unlimited ammo. The shotgun is the only weapon you have to reload. Everything else has an infinite clip. That becomes frustrating when you're in a tight room with a dozen enemies. The water cannon offering a speed up mechanic is cool but it doesn't feel very good to use when you're required to use it to make long jumps. The belt is cool as a whip/grappling hook but the cool down on it makes it less than desirable. to use.
My big, broad issue with this game is that it has a really cool idea that does not fit a full game scope. At least not the game that is here. The game reaches a point where it really feels like it becomes derivative of other FPS games almost as if they ran out of ideas of what to do. I don't want to say it's lazy because it does feel like an homage but also there are so many and so frequent homages it starts to feel less like an homage and more like borrowing someone else's homework.
Don't get me wrong. This game is really filled with cool ideas and parts, but it also feels like it starts to suffer because they just throw mud at the wall and are seeing what sticks. I love all the fabulous parts about the game. I just wish it had a bit more of its' own identity to really set itself apart. On the whole it's just okay but that doesn't mean that this game doesn't do some really great things.
