Fashion Police Squad Review (Soybeans)
I really, really wanted to like Fashion Police Squad. It's not a bad game by any means, but I don't think its really a game that really grabs you.
I played the Demo earlier this year and I really enjoyed it. There weren't many huge changes I noticed, and you get the first 3 missions, which is pretty substantial. If you enjoy the Demo, you'll probably like the full version.
I think there's a lot of good stuff in FPS, especially if you like the tongue-in-cheek campiness and sillyness. I wouldn't describe it as 'laugh out loud' funny, but it's a good lighthearted romp, and it's not super difficult either.
There's a good weapon variety and they all have two different modes, and you have to use the right weapon on specific enemy types. Unfortunately, none of them feel particularly great to use, and I really don't get much of an emotional response from defeating enemies. It's not the lack of gore, but clearing even through groups of enemies isn't super satisfying. It's kind of hard to articulate unless you've played the game.
The first two sets of levels send you through urban environments and they're pretty good. A good mix of long and short range combat, and wide open arenas for you to deal with groups of enemies. Unfortunately, the third chapter sends you into cramped subway tunnels, which is a real bummer unless you really like corner peaking enemies. The enemy variety is quite good, and you have to use the correct weapon to take them out. But, most of them are just medium ranged enemies that throw things at you, making them all blend together, even if you have to use different weapons on them.
Fashion Police Squad doesn't exactly ignite much passion for fashion in me, which is a real shame. It's got a lot of style, good music and great tone that doesn't take itself very seriously. Unfortunately, as much as they add to the core combat loop, I think it just doesn't feel as satisfying as it should be.
