Fashion Police Squad Review (Miss Poopy Sexy)
Looking for something to play this Pride Month? Well look no further, introducing Fashion Police Squad. Finally, a boomer shooter for the girlies and the gays!
For real though, this is probably the best shooter I've played in 15 years (that's since Halo: Reach, y'all). Unsurprisingly for a game called Fashion Police Squad, this game oozes style; It definitely apes the Doom: Eternal "lock and key" approach, wherein every enemy is a "lock" that requires a specific weapon(s), or "key", to open: see an enemy with a drab grey suit? Shoot him with a paintball gun! What about an enemy with a suit that's too loose? A few rounds from your trusty sewing machine assault rifle and he's good to go! What about the "Karens" how fly around the arena, using their baggy dresses like a wingsuit and raining pepper spray death from above? Use the assault rifle, or cinch 'em with your belt! The game will usually give you a couple options for dealing with your foes, so you're not always locked in to using just one weapon. This was a really deft decision by the developers, since you can kill two birds with one stone so to speak and can take down multiple enemies with the same weapon before needing to switch; you'll be switching weapons often enough that combat feels fast-paced and tactical, but not so often that it becomes burdensome or disrupts the flow.
Hey speaking of that belt, we need to talk about the swinging mechanics in this game: holy sh*t is it fun to swing around in Fashion Police Squad. It's not often that a boomer shooter really nails platforming, but some of the most badass moments in Fashion Police Squad are when you're swinging around from lampposts using your belt, or using a water gun on the ground in front of you to give yourself a speed boost, like the orange gel from Portal 2. If I had one minor critique it's that I wish the belt-swinging factored a little more prominently into the combat arenas, but that is a teeny-tiny little nitpick. Overall, platforming in this game absolutely rules.
These incredible shooting and traversal mechanics are all wrapped up in a story that is every bit as loud, flamboyant, and over-the-top as you expect. Some of the jokes and dialogue are a little cringe-inducing, but on the whole it is super impressive how this game manages to toe that line of being too much without actually crossing it. I can think of very few games that made me laugh as hard (ans as consistently!) as Fashion Police Squad.
The last thing I want to say is that this game is the DEBUT TITLE from Mopeful Games. This game would be impressive no matter who made it, but you're telling me that this is this studio's FIRST CRACK at a game like this, and it is THIS stylish, THIS creative, and plays THIS well?? Absolutely insane. This studio has such a rock solid grasp on boomer shooter game design, this is such a confident debut in every aspect, this game deserves to pop off WAY more than it has, and I can't wait to see what these guys make next.
TL;DR Fashion Police Squad totally rules and you should absolutely buy it. 9/10
