Fallout: New Vegas - Honest Hearts Review (Voltan)
I was told many times by other Fallout fans that if I wanted to play the DLC, I should start with Honest Hearts. I thought it would be a safe bet, and I had previously read a lot of Joshua Graham's lore so I admittedly rather foolishly went in with high expectations. I'll start with the good and end with the bad.
The good:
The 75 weight limit was annoying but actually ended up being good since it meant I had room in my inventory for good quest items. Speaking of quest items, they ended up being really good. This was definitely one of the good parts of the DLC for me. Another good part was when I viewed Zion for the first time. That view was amazing.
The bad:
Another review said it already, but the first Dead Horse you meet nearly got shot by me because I thought he was a White Leg. Thats already not great, but it gets worse. The environment gets stale pretty fast, even faster than it does in the base game. Hell, I'd rather spend 40 hours in the Mojave than Zion since the Mojave atleast mixes it up in some places like Jacobstown and the eastern half the map. Zion is the same red rocks for the entirety of it, and the narrow ravines just being boring to traverse.
The biggest letdown was Joshua Graham himself. There was so much buildup to him, both in the DLC and in the community because of his backstory. It felt especially exciting at first since the game wanted me to meet him ASAP. Yet when I met him, the meeting was very unremarkable. Infact, here is where the events of the DLC get very blurry. I don't remember them at all, other than that after meeting Joshua it was just a bunch of fetch quests.
The DLC's questline has 3 companions, or atleast it did in my playthrough. However, none of them can accompany you in the Mojave. They all leave at some point. Joshua Graham himself was one of them, and he was ultimately the worst of the 3 since none of the usual companion options worked with him. I should add these 3 each stuck around for 1 quest. They promptly left to never be seen again afterwards.
I will add that the beginning of Honest Hearts and also the last quest involving Graham were the only times he was important, despite the fact he is literally on the thumbnail for this DLC and literally the first image on the steam page. He is otherwise rarely seen and poorly implemented. Just read a nukapedia page on him, since that somehow did him more justice than this entire DLC did.
Conclusion
This DLC was mad overrated. I went in expecting it to be a good DLC, admittedly with high expectations to only be seriously let down. This was my first New Vegas dlc too, and it ultimately left a bad taste in my mouth. I wouldn't recommend this dlc, personally.
