Fairy Tail 2 Review (Sleepy Boi)
I am currently at chapter 4, will update once I am finished. CONTAINS SPOILERS
I'm enjoying the game so far but I don't think I could recommend it for it's current price. The graphics are a step up from the old game and I personally enjoy the new combat system on its own (I do miss the old combat system but taken as a separate entity I find it fun). I would be okay with the small playable cast if more characters showed up in the game such as major characters likes Freed or Bisca. For a game made for fans a lot of scenes are either cut out or have text over a black screen. Even characters that do have in game models leave something to be desired such as when Sherria unlocks third origin, she stays in her base character model rather than updating it to be her older version like the anime and manga. Another aspect that felt lacking as a fan was Nienharts historia's or should I say historia. The game leaves out Ikaruga and Azuma as well as the Lyon and Gray team-up. The historia they keep isn't even the right model of Kyoka and Simon is but a png. We once again are missing Meredy and the rest of Crime Sorcier. It feels like they added the Spriggan 12, Zeref, and Acnologia's models and decided that was good enough as the majority of other models are reused. It would have felt far more fluid if they used a system similar to persona 5 where it swaps from animated cut scenes back to game play, even if jarring I think it would have worked better than the freeze frames with text or the completely black screens. Some unison raids from the first game are missing such as Gajeel and Natsu and almost all the other unison raids have been shortened. I am playing on the most difficult setting available and it is challenging at times. It does not feel impossible and it does not feel like I need to be over levelled in order to beat the bosses. Sometimes the team AI feels janky with teammates not healing, not using their awakening, if you swap to an ally to try and awaken, the character you were previously on will use all your attack points on not so stellar attacks. Healers heal on occasion but it feels like if you want your team to stay healthy you are essentially forced on the healer role. No indicators of how certain AOE moves are going to hit. I want to main Mirajane because obviously but her AOE moves often only hit one character and it genuinely feels like a toss up if others are included. For example both Mira and Juvia have a attack that says AOE circle, however Juvia's using Juvia AOE will usually hit more characters than Mira's, which would be fine if there was any indicator of where it would hit. You cannot swap targets mid combo so if you are attempting to break multiple characters guards you have to wait for your timer to reset.
I am currently unsure if we are able to play as the villians but I really hope we can.
Fingers crossed Meredy is one of the DLC but my hopes are not high.
Overall I am enjoying the game despite my not so stellar review and I plan on 100% it as a long time Fairy Tail fan, but I cannot recommend it for its price as it feels like its in early access or beta with the amount of content lacking. Will update and clean up the review once I have completed the entire game.
