Extremely Powerful Capybaras Review (Landon Keyser)
The demo for this game is one of my most played demos on Steam – that alone should indicate how stoked I was for this game. Not only does the game feature my favorite animal the capybara, but the replay value is spot on. Currently, I’m trying to think of an excuse to tell my boss I’m out sick tomorrow so I can keep playing.
Extremely Powerful Capybaras is a top-down, bullet hell game where waves of enemies come at you and your goal is to survive and defeat the boss. Meanwhile, you pick up orbs that increase your XP and let you choose between 3 semi-random cards that will give you passive and activated abilities. Additional capybaras can be unlocked, and you can upgrade your heroes as you go, making them better next time you use them. There are two gameplay modes. Arena and Frenzy. Arena lets you choose between three levels to get a feel for the game. Frenzy is the same three levels but with adjustable difficulties which allow you to gain gold and character points easier.
At the time of writing this review, the game has just been released and will likely need a patch or two before I would consider it full complete. Right now, it feels like 80% complete and that good enough to give it a good review. That being said, there are a few bugs – some forgivable and others that I hope will be fixed. This review is for single player.
The Good
Four wonderfully unique capybara heroes to start with, and two that are unlockable.
Addicting gameplay, easy to pick up difficult to master.
Never the same game twice.
Gold is easy to come by, upgrading items is easy to do.
Game is as presented in the trailer, not too different from the demo
The Meh
Not much of a story.
Soundtrack is a little uninspiring.
Definitely a grind to max out heroes and items but still better than doing that in Warcraft.
The game can probably be beat with all achievements in about 8 hours.
The Bad
Sometimes the semi random card you get is already a maxed-out ability. This has happened to me twice.
Lots of lag for a bullet hell game. I can deal with the occasional lag spike, but considering the graphics my computer should not have trouble running this.
Once you learn the cards the game becomes routine unless you switch play styles. Not a bad thing but right now I’m six hours in and unless I max out the difficulty in Frenzy mode there’s not much of a challenge beyond bugged achievements.
Overall, this is a good game worth the time and price. Still bugging as it just came out but I’m hopeful things will get patched up soon.
