Evil West Review (Doctrine Dark)
A decent game with some really odd choices for game design.
Co-op
The co-op system is old and outdated you guest during co-op gains nothing as there isn't shared progression in the game which makes playing your own single player file a slog.
Art and collectibles
The art direction makes the world look cool but also makes collectibles hard to see. The game is linear which is fine but since some paths split and if you miss something you have to replay the entire stage to pick up what you missed.
Leveling
Leveling is tied to story progression since replaying levels doesn't net you any XP at all and you cannot skip enemies so XP itself is just a bloated unnecessary number they should have just gave you the perk points when you reached a certain area the same way they do with random abilities.
Upgrades
Upgrades cost gold and gold is received from leveling which is story locked or collectibles which is easily missed and requires replaying (see above) So since its mostly tied to progression the same way leveling and perk points are why not just give out points the same way this is just fluffy.
Final verdict the game is fun-ish but between the unnecessary leveling and upgrade fluffy, the poor co-op implementation and the unrewarding and tedius replay tedium. I can't give this a full thumps up. Its more a 3/5.
Caveat - if your looking for dumb fun and your not worried about the progression and tedium is a problem for you will probably enjoy this. And if your playing Co-op and you never plan to play solo than you will have even more fun because all of the problems are saddled on the host.
