Ember Knights Review (imaratokay)

Hmm,
Played this a lot with my boyfriend, starting on the most difficult setting we could make it as that's how he prefers his experience. Definitely took us awhile to progress due to this, but worth it in my opinion. Now, I never played this game a year ago, or during early access, so other reviews of this game may be outdated, however, I was reading through a few of the negative reviews on this game and thought I would share my thoughts, given I am playing this in 2025, not 2022, so things may have been updated.
1) Unfortunately, if you're playing multiplayer, forget about trying to unlock everything unless you're the host. Not sure if this is intentional, but unless you're the host, you won't see new skills - or even different miniboss variants - added to the book.
2) During one playthrough, we made it to the first blocked door in world 5. We always go for the stats that give bonus', however, after clearing two different doors, we were only given one "big stat" instead of two big ones and four small ones. Very odd.
3) I read a review talking about how after early access, there was an update that many felt was bad for this game. One person in particular, wrote about how healing was no longer optional and was now necessary, claiming that they needed items that could "heal 30 HP on demand" in order to progress. Unless this was a previous issue that has now been resolved, that is simply not true. Not once have I chosen items that allow me to heal 30 HP, mostly because I don't really care for them. All I use is the ember tree - gain 5 HP every time you enter a room, and a relic that allows me to gain 10 HP when entering a room ONLY if it's offered. Half of my playthroughs I play without this relic, or the relic that allows all knights to gain 3 max HP when completing a perfect room. There is absolutely no need to make a build that requires you to heal 30 HP, that's just absurd.
4) A few people wrote about the weapons themselves and how they were better during early access. Again, I never played during early access, however, from what some people have written about the weapons previously, it seems as though the weapons have not improved. Many of their mods require charged attacks, which are annoying to do when there are 20 billion enemies on the screen that can and will kill you if you're not quick enough. As some people pointed out, it doesn't match the fast paced nature of this game - I agree. I often find if I take the time to charge me attacks, I take more damage and die quicker. Not ideal.
5) Weapons again. A few of the weapons seem unbalanced compared to others. While I definitely have my least favourites (I'm looking at you, hammer), I don't feel as though any are just straight up back like some suggest, however they do feel a bit unbalanced - that could just be me, though.
Overall, this game is great. While some of the negative aspects of this game can be annoying, most have way around them, it just means putting a little more effort in than should be needed. That can be annoying to some players, but some may see it as a challenge. Personally, I don't feel as if these impact the nature of the game. The charged attacks can take some getting used to - figuring out whether you enjoy timing your perfect attacks or rapidly mashing the buttons to be awarded the button masher title at the end of a world - but once you figure out your style things get a lot easier. I would recommend trying out both, and try to use both. If you have the time for charged attacks, use them. If you're drowning in enemies, spam the attack button, or summon a million yalees to do the job for you - your choice :)
