Elderand Review (ZEROEIGHTVALK)


one of the achievements is bugged and not able to be unlocked, meaning its impossible to get 100% on the game - thats always a lovely thing
the sound design is awful, most effects are just stock sounds that really take you out of the immersion
while the visuals are pretty good at times, the game still feels like that old offbrand nintendo controller you gave to the friend you didnt like back in the day. i cant explain it, it just feels uncanny
no auto-saving at bonfires, you have to manually save and when you die you lose everything and have to reload
you can't rebind the secondary weapon (pressing up + attack is default) which is awful, you will constantly use up your charges by accident
picked up items automatically get equipped and theres nothing you can do about it
i will never understand why gamedevs think its a good idea to have your character take massive amounts of damage when just touching the hitbox of an enemy
while the shield is more useful than in most other games its still seemingly completely random which attacks you can block and which you cannot - sad
balancing is horrible, magic is way too strong, if you put enough points into wisdom you will basically have infinite mana, and ranged attacks (wand spell attack) are objectively superior to melee. (monsters basically have no ranged AI)
dodging has no i-frames
after running the game for 10 hours you will get random freezes and gpu usage spikes, really weird, restarting the game helps tho
when leveling up you can distribute skillpoints in dark souls fashion. (strength, dexterity, wisdom and vitality) these stats cap out at 50 tho, and most of the time at least 1 or 2 of them are entirely useless for your build, meaning that leveling will stop feeling rewarding at a certain point in the game
item upgrades are static and linear. every sword gets +3 to damage, every armor gets +1 to defense, every wand gets +2 to magic damage. considering shooting magic projectiles with your wand costs mana depending on the wand its completely stupid to use any of the endgame weapons when your projectile deals 90 damage for 38 mana compared to your starting wand dealing 80 damage for 12 mana
