Dynasty Warriors: Origins Review (Cyberspud)
I've stopped playing to quickly put down some thoughts. So far I've only played through the initial tutorial so this might be driven by hype. However...
The soundtrack absolutely slaps. With amazing, fresh new tracks (The new main theme goes so hard) and remixes of older tracks, the music is absolutely peak.
The graphics look amazing so far. The environments are great and everyone looks so good. I can only hope you all have decent enough rigs to run this as it was meant to be seen. As a side note, I'm a big fan of the character redesigns so far. Young Guan Yu and sexy Zhang Jiao look fantastic.
Gameplay-wise, this is what DW has been needing. Yes, it's hardly a fresh take as more and more games turn souls-like (call it what you want, that's what it is) but it absolutely fits here. The battles are significantly more epic. This is the 1vs1000 experience we were meant to have. Regular mobs aren't just mere fodder any more and you can't just run wild as we used to. We finally get to use our brains again, especially with officers. Sure, some people may not agree with the added difficulty but after years of Koei trying to reinvent the combat system, I reckon this is where the series belongs.
As for the story, this is where my biggest complaint is going to be. Playing through and seeing the events from the Wanderer's POV is great. Seeing and hearing the officers' takes from a more personal angle is going to lend a fresh, new take from stories that we've seen a thousand times before. But where the hell is CAW? We know Koei have character creation locked down, with Nioh 2 and Rise of the Ronin having, arguably, the best creators in the industry just now, there's seemingly no reason for it to be missing here.
Obviously I can't comment on much else just for now, as I haven't played anything besides the intro and the demo but from the looks of things so far... this is it. This is what we've been waiting for folks. Koei have cooked and we're eating good.
DYNASTY WARRIORS IS BACK!!!
