Dying Light: Hellraid Review (Jäger)

PROS:

Nice Enemy variation. There are 9 differnt enemy types including 2 bosses.
The Story mode boss battle is great, but very difficult! (However the raid-mode boss battle is bad)
Lots of well hidden secrets for perceptive players. Raid mode has a total of 16 secret areas/ rooms to discover.
You have access to a variey of weapons including maces, long swords, axes, bows, staffs, elemental flasks/bombs, mallets, bludgeons and even... a shotgun!
Raid mode was longer than I was expected. (20 minutes to over an hour depending on playstyle and how often you loot)
Selectable Bounties add replayability of sorts to future playthroughs of raid mode and offer rewards back in the main game!
utilise all agility, combat and legend skills earned back from the main game here. The skill trees stay the same, so you can still defeat enemies via dropkick, drop attack, grapple, power attack and more. (Assuming you have already unlocked those skills)
There are many different "arenas" to challenge you, some of them will test your agility expertise rather than your combat proficiency. Be careful not to fall into the lava pits!

CONS:

There are SO many repetitive areas with only 2 different objectives throughout all of raid mode: Kill all enemies or active a shrine to open a door to the next area.
There is no option to sell anything that you pick up, you can only dismantle picked up melee weapons for a few coins.
There is no stash to store weapons and items like in the main game. Your inventory space is all you get!
No option to upgrade weapons despite them showing that you can!
The currency that you earn in Hellraid is ONLY usable in the main game (You can buy Hellraid themed weapons and items next to the arcade machine). whats the point of earning money in hellraid if it isn't even usable in that mode?
Most of the bounties that you can pick up are very generic and not creative, many of the requirements simply ask you to do the following generic actions:
- cut off x number of limbs
- decapitate x enemies
- throw elemental bombs at x number of enemies
- kill x enemy type
- kill x number of enemies
after a while these get very stale and made me lose interest after completing only half of the avaliable bounties.
If you keep seeing new bounties with the same requirements as the previous bounty that you just completed, there is very little incentive to complete them!
All of the Enemies have far too much health on the hard and nightmare difficulties, attacks with your melee weapons just bounce off enemies several times before you even feel like you are doing any damage. They dont have health bars and only show blood effects when they are close to death. There is absolutely no visual indicator to tell how weak an enemy is unless they are almost close to death!
Kicking and tackling enemies is honestly useless in this mode. when fighting skeletons (especially the armoured and shielded skeletons), almost every basic attack that you perform will be countered or dodged. This is infuriating as it leads to very lengthy battles where you can really only rely on weak throwables and spamming your basic swing. Repeating basic attacks that just bounce off of enemies, yet having NO other effective tactic to vanquish them is absolutely infuriating!
To give an example of a frustrating enemy, the "Shielded Skeleton" is virtually unbeatable unless you wipe every other enemy because they can easily counter almost all of your melee attacks, they will also turn around very quickly, meaning that you are completely unable to get behind them.
They have NO discernible weak point to exploit. Normally enemies in games that have shields or some other large form of armour will ALSO have some form of weakness that the player can exploit to their advantage (eg. Dodging their attacks multiple times in a row will leave them tired and vulnerable to your own attacks for a short amount of time). Whats the point of this enemy? If it were a Lone Miniboss type enemy I can maybe understand it a little bit better, however it truly seems that the enemy design in Hellraid is far more rage inducing than it is intuitive.
The following 3 achievements are ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE:
1)Fast as hell = Finish Hellraid under 30 min
Forces you to rush through the DLC and lose out on good items that would help you in the final arena. At least you dont have to play Hellraid for too long to obtain this achievement1
2)Non omnis moriar = Finish Hellraid with only one life left and 0 medkits
Here is an achievement that rewards bad players for struggling. WHY?
3)Wake up! = Finish Hellraid on Nightmare
An awful, awful difficulty made 10 times worse by the incredibly damage resistant enemies that can stun lock you, parry and dodge your attacks frequently. Not to mention that most of the rooms/ arenas in the DLC require you to kill ALL ENEMIES before the door to the next area will unlock / open. It is also a blatant death sentence if you play through the mode solo.

Overall Rating: 4/10

It is easily the weakest Dying light 1 DLC out there.
It might not be the shortest DLC when compared to the Bozak Horde, but it is just so repetitive and artificially difficult that you will be bored and/ or frustrated after completing 2 or 3 Raid Mode runs. PLEASE play this in coop if you simply must play it, It'll make the whole experience less stressful.
Though I would much rather play Bozak Horde with a friend over this!
