Dust: An Elysian Tail Review (Stret)
I genuinely have no idea of how this game has such positive reviews. like seriously it just blows my mind
The first thing i felt when playing this game was cringy character designs and dialogue, right at the start of the game. However, that was just the main cast, and in particular i was annoyed at Fidget. And i was very surprised to have my first impressions over fidget change :
The side characters, their designs, and the two other main characters managed to be so utterly atrocious, cringeworthy and painful to witness, that fidget actually somehow manages to be a more interesting and fun character than everyone else.
Theres nothing inherently wrong with childish-styled animal-people characters. But the ones in this game, much like their dialogue and story, just fill me with pain. They're not like the ones in pieces of media that anyone of any age, even adult ones, can still enjoy. It just extremely insanely cringeworthy, and i dont even think that kids will enjoy these characters very much either.
The main character and the talking sword in particular are awful, they feel like a 12 year old wanted to make the cool badass and somewhat edgy character, then decided they wanted the character to have some soft moments.
The worst thing is when you have a game and characters that are basically impossible to take seriously, and then the story tries to have more mature elements and death. I realised i couldnt put up with the cringe after i defeated the first boss that had just massacred the a village, somehow made the mc feel bad for him with their dialogue that started edgy and suddenly turned into a sob story, and then the dialogue ends by the two saying
" Ashes to ashes.. "
" Dust to Dust "
and then the boss dies.
I said the word "cringe" a lot. I simply have no other way to describe it, because thats literally all it is. This game is just the absolute epitome of that term.
The combat in the game is honestly more atrocious than the story and characters. With your weapon you're just mindlessly spamming the same small selection of moves against hordes (and i really mean, HORDES) of braindead dumb damage sponge enemies that can hardly attack you effectively, but that get stunlocked by almost anything. Except theres 9999 of them, which would get kind of annoying in the highest difficulty, because i would get hit once every several hundred enemies killed, and that single hit would probably take a huge chunk of my hp or one shot me instantly, so i just lose more progress and have to do the chore even more. Which gets even more annoying when you die to something with no wind-up from off-screen. It gets even worse when some enemies that do nothing except slow everything down and force you to take it slow, instead of ending the chore faster, are introduced. The movement is genuinely floaty and imprecise as balls, sometimes geometry launches you into orbit with the flight move.
And then you have the fidget attacks, which are a substantial portion of the relevant unlocks in the game. They're basically just a few different flavors of braindead, effortless, spammable AoE nukes that will hit the entire screen. You can either have it alongside your sword as another tool to slowly chip away at extreme damage sponge enemies, or you can invest it all into fidget so you spend the entire game nuking and stunlocking almost all the enemies (except this time at an actually decent pace) by doing nothing except pressing two buttons.
People told me this game had cool metroid-elements and it advertises itself as a metroidvania. But all separate regions are completely unconnected from eachother and are all accessed via fast-travel. The metroid-style powerups do nothing except to create an arbitrary obstacle between the player and some (often garbage) treasure that will require backtracking after.
I genuinely have no idea why this game has a gear and level up system. Its all the exact same gear with better numbers, its just completely superfluous and adds nothing except maybe making you grind for the highest difficulty. There really wasnt a need to come up with 90000 different kinds of materials and gear that change nothing except numbers
summed up :
- the characters are mentally painful to look at and listen
- the story is mentally painful to think of in retrospect, let alone actually witness
- the combat is mind numbingly boring, until you get one-shot by a single hit and then it turns into an aneurysm
- the highest difficulty somehow manages to be 0% challenge 100% chore. I am not even exagerating
- all the elements like metroid-styled unlocks, gear stats, etc feel completely half assed, insignificant at best, and a complete detriment at worst.
Dont get me wrong, its somewhat impressive that a single dude made almost every single thing in this game, thats admirable effort. But just because it takes a lot of effort, that doesnt mean it cant be bad. The only pro i see in this game are the hand drawn visuals and graphics, which clearly took a lot of work for a one-man-job, and i admire that... but i still think it mostly looks dull.
This is one of the very few games that i straight up could not get myself to finish them. dropped it about halfway in so i dont know if it gets better after, but from what ive seen, think this might be the game with the lowest quality/effort ratio i have ever played in my life. I even feel like playing through the entirety of YIIK was (and is) more worth doing than enduring half, let alone the entirety of Dust: An Elysian Tail. In fact, if i ignore literal shovelware games, this is easily the worst game i have ever played
I have absolutely zero idea of how this game is reviewed so positively. Im just going to assume that people want to fuck Fidget.
