Dragon Quest Treasures Review (Kosari)
Once I got 9 hours in, that's when this game got boring. Not because of the music, not because of the story, because of the GAMEPLAY.
1. THE MONSTERS DON'T SHUT UP: I don't know what they were thinking where they decided to have your monster party members to say something literally EVERY 5 seconds. At first, its cute, its funny, I liked it. But after 30 mins to an hour, it gets old. And there is no option to turn it off. So while I look for treasure I am hearing the bat say "I like to SWOOOOOOOOP" every 5 seconds. Like I said, funny and cute at first, but after an hour, I am going insane.
2. AUTOSAVE: The autosave is not frequent enough, so if you are not actively saving every 15-20 mins or so, if you die you could lose TONS of progress. Because this game doesn't let you continue where you left off if you die, its straight up you go back to your last save. Very unforgiving for a game that is supposed to be relaxing and carefree lol.
3. REPETITIVE GAMEPLAY: When I got to the first island, it wants you to fix the other stations. I was like okay cool, then second island its the same thing, third island... same thing. Sure there is different quests on each island, but idk, wouldn't it be more engaging if there was a different reason or method to unlock the train stations on each island? Not just copy and paste the same dialogue for each train master. Also that's whats weird too, you get to a station that isn't up and running and the station master looks old and broken. Makes sense right? Then once you fix it, the station master STILL looks old and broken but when you talk to it it says its up and running, really? I couldn't tell!
4. LANDSCAPES: The islands are huge and beautiful, but so empty. It makes you want to run around and explore but there just really isn't much out there to find. It's too bland and too empty for how much area is offered to the player.
5. ENEMIES: Now this is a part where I don't really understand why they didn't put more guidance or advice for the player. When you have to unlock stations, there's usually very high level enemies at one of them. So I am guessing that means you just can't do it at the moment or you just gotta be careful and not die? Would be nice if the game told you, especially since the pig or cat talks to you constantly, even telling me "Are you sure you want to fight that?" when its a enemy that's like 10 levels below me. Like how about tell me that when its an actual high level enemy. Or they will randomly tell me "We can't talk to that monster right now" when I am fighting. What?? TALK TO WHO?
6. THE CHARACTERS: I REALLY REALLY wish they would've done more with Mia and Erik. Like maybe make them look like actual treasure hunters? How come they dig up treasures with a KNIFE? How is that even realistic, it would be so cool if they had a shovel on their back and like a backpack so it LOOKS like they are out looking for treasure. Instead you just carry a knife around, which makes sense for killing enemies but when you are stabbing the ground over and over "digging" up treasure I am like what is this.
CONCLUSION: The game play is just badly designed. I feel like it could be so much better if they had put more detail and experiences into the open world, and put thought behind the player experience such as thinking that maybe hearing a monster say something every 5 seconds could be annoying or how digging up treasure with a knife isn't that realistic. This game is definitely geared towards dragon quest fans, because all the treasures are items from other games. The music is great as always and the story isn't bad either. It just feels like a studio took unreal engine and used the characters and monsters of dragon quest and threw them into a badly designed unreal engine world. But since I still love anything dragon quest, I most likely will still play this game just to finish it for the story and music.
