Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake Review (The Questing Bunny)

I wish this were a remake of the version of the game I grew up with, on the GBC, but it isn't. This is a beautiful-looking remake of the phone port. The same one we got on Switch back when DQXIS came out as a side dish to capitalize on the Dragon Quest Fever the series was expecting at the time. With nominal helpful features and gameplay features that honestly overcompensate to make up for how the game was back when it came out on much simpler systems. Why, yes, the game has remarkable presentation. I love how my characters look, I love seeing these towns I grew up exploring in 8bits so vibrant and colorful, with elevation added in ways those earlier systems could never. The music is still wonderful, and I teared up the first time I heard my favorite song in the game.

But is it worth $60 in today's gaming landscape? Not even close. There wasn't enough added to justify the price. The Monster "Wrangler" is not at all what I expected, feeling very cold and detached in a game with a spinoff series about befriending monsters. There are minigames present in earlier versions simply not included.

I could forgive a lot of the problems I have with it and just go with the flow if it wasn't for the absolutely agonizing amount of random encounters. There are so many that I can't play the game for a long period of time, the constant interruptions when trying to explore or solve puzzles actually gives me headaches so intense that it affects my mood - and I wanted this to be a cozy game to lay around with. That's my biggest issue with the game at all.

I like DQ3. That game is the entire reason why I'm even into Dragon Quest at all, even if my first was Monsters. And I am at least going to finish this in honor of that love. But I CAN'T reccommend it to anyone unless they all ready love Dragon Quest III so much that the faults with the game won't matter to them.
