Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero Review (ArchRanger)

As someone who put countless hours into BT2 and BT3 back in the day, I feel obligated to leave a review.
This game is an amazing sequel to the series and continues the trend of being a true DB simulator, bringing back 90% of the roster while introducing DBS and Daima characters. It’s not the most technical or competitive DB fighting game but that was never what the series was about. Instead we get a gorgeous arena fighter with a large selection of characters, with obviously huge amounts of love poured into the game and so many small details that Spike Chunsoft added as reference to the anime.

The positives:
- Huge roster: With 182 characters/transformations to choose from, everyone should be able to find a favorite character to re-enact fights or create their own
- Beautiful graphics and destructible stages: These really help sell the DB simulator and the series has never look better
- Interesting story mode: With so many DB/Z/GT/S games just rehashing the same story, the devs did a good job packaging it up to keep it fresh. The new what-ifs add some nice twists too
- Fast paced combat: While not as technical as DBFZ, this game still offers really fast paced and fun combos that both new players and BT veterans can pick up to master
- The new custom battle mode allows you to create your own mini-episodes!
The Neutral:
-Character customization is awesome but also lacking: The ability to kit your favorite characters out with capsules is back but the amount of initial capsules is a bit lacking. Perhaps this will change as I get to a higher player level. Also, not being able to put halos or scouters on all characters is disappointing to see
- Outfit selection is great for the main trio but poor for everyone else: Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan have a decent selection of outfits but everyone else either doesn’t have any or are limited to small variations. This sticks out even more with the BT2/3 alt colors seemingly absent from the game
- Shenron wishes are underwhelming: in the past games, we had 8+ characters available from wishing, compared to only two this time around. Minor issue but still odd to see
The negatives:
- Lack of stages: While the stage destruction and detail is amazing, having only 12 stages feels really limiting. Especially with major ones that were part of the original games not making the cut like Kami’s Tower, Mountain Road, or Kame’s House. Hopefully we will get more stages added along alongside DLC and free updates
- Strange roster omissions: Having majority of the OGDB characters get cut is a little lame but can be remedied with DLC but things like Shin, Goku (Teen)/Kid Gohan’s Oozaru form, Base Garlic Jr,, GT Vegeta Base & SSJ, or even alternate costumes for Broly (Z) and Frieza Soldier seems odd. Hopefully fleshed out with future updates
If you love DB and/or played the original BT games back on PS2/GC, I highly suggest you get this game. Well worth the money and I am sure this game will get plenty of support going forward, adding the various missing stages and characters (fingers crossed for manga characters and OVA characters) to continue creating our ultimate DB fantasies.
This game so far gets a solid 9/10 from me at its current launch state.
