DmC: Devil May Cry - Vergil's Downfall Review (Drumbas)
I am surprised to see so much negativity around this DLC. Is it worse then the main game? Sure. Is it bad? Not at all.
Nothing here is honestly horrible. Its around 2 hours of content. You play as Vergil after the events of the main game. Story wise it is not interesting at all, it doesn't give a lot of closure to the huge cliffhanger of the main game and the actual content of the story is kind of meaningless.
Gameplay wise its more DMC. Vergil controls similar to dante with a couple of new/different mechanics. Vergil can be much more explosive compared to Dante but doesn't have the flexibility and huge toolkit of Dante. However the lack of flexibility is fine because again its a very short DLC. The actual combat/gameplay will generally feel more difficult compared to the base game. They like to throw more enemies at you and the general level design is a bit less friendly to you. After finishing the main game this can be a welcome increase of difficulty and a nice test of the base games mechanics, especially with how big vergils attacks can be.
Talking about level design. The DLC in this aspect is a lot less good as well. It uses the standard limbo style world without any of the interesting stuff from the base game. Where is my underwater tower? The TV? The fight club? Especially with a new setting in vergil I would have really liked to see something the base game did so well be pushed even more. That lack of polish can be felt throughout the entire dlc. You can fight enemies in sections that don't feel designed at all for combat or fight enemies that feel like they weren't designed for Vergils moveset.
All in all its fine. Nothing special but on a sale you can usually pick this up for around 2 bucks. At a sale this is a recommend for those that enjoyed the base game. Its a nice difficulty increase and its nice playing with a different moveset. There are a lot of minor annoyances here but overall its more of that base game gameplay and the base game was fun enough for this to still be pretty enjoyable even with its flaws.
