DmC: Devil May Cry Review (mister chef)
If this game didn't hold the DMC name and was called literally anything else, even something as silly as "El Donte's Adventure In Limbo" it would have been a classic that is still talked about to this very day. The gameplay is just PERFECT. The music is awesome, with one of the best OSTs I have heard in a video game.
Compared to hack and slash games that were released in 2013, like MGR: R this game is MILES better in terms of gameplay. (as much as I LOVE MGR)
So, what went wrong? The game had no character, no confidence in itself, unlike MGR.
The problem is, it tried to reboot DMC into a direction that fans of the series didn't like, so it was bound to fail.
And the developers were frustrated with how the fans were getting mad about "small" changes such as Dante's new hair colour (which is understandable to be frustrated about, imagine working on a game for a long time only for it to be hated because of a hair colour change, a change that was forced by Capcom, but at the same time, the fans are also right since the white/silver hair is one of Dante's defining features that the reboot Dante feels like a different character, which he kind of is) that they tried to make fun of the older games in their presentations, interviews and in the game. This didn't help their game sell on release, obviously.
The trailer also showed a completely different game, one with a much darker tone that looked very, very cool. Too bad they had to change it after the reveal due to fan reactions.
This game had an unfortunate development. Capcom forced the devs to change everything about the game to distance themselves from the older games as possible, to give it a more "Western" feel. This was common at the time, as Capcom kept sourcing out games to be made by western devs, and wanted the games to feel "Western". This included changing Dante's design. The original concept.
Capcom wanted the remake to be as different from the original DMC as possible, which hurt Ninja Theory and the game a lot. Then after the reveal trailer they had to change a lot of elements in the game due to the massive backlash that they got from the fans.
One has to wander, what was their original vision like if Capcom didn't force changes? Or even how the game would have turned out if they stuck to what was shown in the ad?
Is the gameplay is better than DMC 3/4/5? No.
Is is better than every other hack and slash game in terms of gameplay? To me? Absolutely. Every game I have ever played were you control a third person character and had combat in it paled in comparison to DmC in terms of gameplay. (Besides the mentioned games.)
Oh well. At least Itsuno loved it, and wanted a sequel to be made for DmC. And DmC has also inspired a lot of things in DMC V. (
Refer to my DMC V review for more info on that )
TL;DR get this game, forget that it has the DMC name, and you'll love it.
