DmC: Devil May Cry Review (Famix)

DmC Devil May Cry was a decision made by Capcom to reboot the Devil May Cry series when Devil May Cry 4 didn't meet their projected sales. The idea was to reboot it to appeal to a primarily American audience, much like they were attempting with other reboots so that they could grow the franchise. The result was a mixed bag among fans. After playing through all of the prior DMC games, excluding 2, as I'm planning to play it last, I understand the fear that players were going through, especially since they were expecting this to replace the original series and for the questions and setups created by Devil May Cry 4 never to be finished. No matter if that's what Capcom was planning or not, we ended up getting a Devil May Cry 5 from the funding of this game. So, knowing that this didn't replace the original series, I believe that this game was reviewed a little too harshly.
This game, unironically, has two of the most creative levels I have ever seen in a video game, and I recommend buying this just to see those two levels. I won't spoil them, but I will say that if you have any experience with epileptic seizures, then you should avoid this game at all costs. Traversal is more fun than it's ever been in the series, with Dante having the ability to glide and grapple hook around levels, and even use the grapple hook to pull platforms. There were challenge missions based around traversal that I had no issues with due to how smooth it is to traverse around them. The iconic backtracking of the series, where the player could return to previous areas unless the path behind was destroyed (often signalling an important boss fight coming up) is missing from this game, but you still have the ability to replay prior levels if you need to grind to get more powerful for a boss fight, although I didn't find them to be too hard in this game, as they were mostly easy to read and dodge if you know what you're doing.
The story's okay, but quite a few scenes are filled with a very cringe-inducing amount of profanity, but it's very easy to shift past, for the most part, as it can be pretty funny in some occasions. There are a few cutscenes present that are extremely cringe-inducing, seeming to think that including sex randomly makes the game more mature (I don't hate sex scenes, but one in the middle of this game is extremely out of place in this game), but they can be skipped since the cringey cutscenes provode literally no exposition.
The combat itself might be the smoothest any Devil May Cry has had, being extremely streamlined for easy combos, but the placement of the dodge buttons on controller (bumpers) are a little distracting since they're above the triggers, which are used to keep your non-sword weapons active. The use of holding buttons to change between three weapons is very creative, and prevents the spamming of one button, like in DMC4 and DMC5, to swap between several weapons to get what you want. There's a controversial feature among fans where a few enemies (who appear more in later difficulties) present in the game can only be harmed by one type of weapon (angellic/demonic), and they tend to throw multiple of them at you at once, which kinda sucks, but they didn't get in the way of my overall enjoyment (will update this when I finish the other difficulties)
Overall, this is one of the most creative games I've ever played, and I'm glad I played it, but it's certainly NOT Devil May Cry.
