Devil May Cry HD Collection Review (BuffedPotato)
I've never played DMC series back in the days, so decided to start from the beginning, no guides, first time blind playthrough, xbox controller.
DMC1
Devil may like
- Atmosphere of levels is great.
- Combat is simple, but satisfying.
- Nice variety of guns, though you get the best gun quite early and I barely used other guns after that.
Devil is in the details
- Immediately noticed some classic resident evil DNA here - fixed angles, door sounds, last boss sequence and timer.
- My mistake was not realizing early enough how powerful devil trigger is and I should've used it more often, at least throughout the second half of the game I utilized it properly, don't be afraid to use it.
- For a slasher there weren't that many fights, but enemies do hit hard, so you need to be focused.
- Voice acting reminds me of RE1, this is both good and bad.
- If you die you restart the whole level, unless you have a special orb that allows you to retry from last room, a very archaic mechanic, but thankfully the levels are somewhat short.
Devil did age... badly.
- Your main enemy is the camera, it's infuriating how bad it can get sometimes, especially with big enemies or bosses, like they made it intentionally bad or didn't know how to fix it.
- Platforming is terrible in the game, thankfully there are no long and tedious sections of it, but even in small doses it sucks ass.
- Underwater controls - terrible.
- Final boss was a shitshow, just use all the items you've got to finish it faster.
- Mission 4 difficulty spike (about 80% of my total deaths happened here), you'd need to do a lot of trial'n'error to complete this stage, very poor game design.
Overall a very mid experience, game is outdated and desperately needs a remake.

DMC2
Devil may suck
You know all the memes surrounding DMC2 and how people "love" it - turns out they weren't kidding.
This disaster of a game is a compilation of ALL the bad game design choices of that period.
It starts kind of okay, but then it goes downhill fast, so I played just to see how bad it can get and I wasn't disappointed. Several times I thought that it couldn't get worse, but the game went - "hold my orbs".
Think of something annoying - DMC2 has it. There is nothing to salvage here, not even a remake will save this.
2/10
DMC3
Devil may play
After playing DMC1 and DMC2 it made me appreciate DMC3 that much more.
Seriously, just skip DMC 1 and 2 and go straight here, plot wise it's also the first title in the series.
Devil approves
- Awesome in-game cutscenes, especially for that time.
- Great boss fights.
- Missions 1-13.
- No underwater levels, thank the devil.
Devil rejects
- Mission 14 onwards is mostly filler, which is a bummer, my enthusiasm dwindled very fast at these last stages, a lot of reused content and sometimes you can even get confused as to where to go or what the game wants you to do. I wasted an hour running around with Samsara (special item) trying to figure out what am I suppose to do with it.
- Camera can be annoying, but much better that it was before.
Overall a solid slasher, I hear people say it's the best in the series, which I'm not that happy to hear, cause I plan to play 4, 5 and DmC later and was hoping things would get better with each game. It's good, but not something I'd praise a lot.

Devil didn't read
A very bare bones port, without mods it only supports full HD resolution.
The only game worth playing out of the 3 is DMC3.
Wait for the remake of DMC1 (I heard rumors about it being in development).
Hmmm... I swear there was another game here, something with 2... maybe it's just the wind.
Having said that I can't recommend buying this, unless you are a big fan of slashers.
