Devil May Cry HD Collection Review (Badsie)

Two games worthy of being called masterpieces, then there's the sh*tstorm that is Dmc 2

I first played these games in 2022, so i had no nostalgia glasses on, and this is why i think you should play them.
Also Features some tiny tiny spoilers.

Devil May Cry 1

Certified Masterpiece.
It's a very fun game, the opening of the game sinks you in as the introduction to Dante is perfect, the story is well written and presented well, combat and controlls can be clunky (as you would expect from a 2001 game), sometimes you can wonder where to go next in the level because the game does not hold your hands ever, and it's difficulty is brilliant.
People complain about the difficulty but i think it's just right, because it makes you WANT to improve and it forces you to learn how the AI works and what enemy type does what, and to heal only when you need it.
It's also filled with puzzles and good platforming for it's time.
Honestly i don't think any game ever will nail the atmosphere of this game again. Not even the other games have come close. Dmc 3 had it's own vibe but it didn't radiate as much atmosphere vibe as dmc 1 did. Dmc 1 has an oppressive horror atmosphere that gets only scarier the more the game goes on.
Something about the castle feels truly demonic, the music when you first enter the castle fills you with mystery, and everything in it makes you feel like theres a force in here that shouldn't be messed with, and Dante aswell felt vulnurable and not this "godmode" demon slayer, despite him being very badass. Through his cocky exterior we could still tell he was shaken during the game, and that makes us the players feel like there's actual risk to being here.
Despite the story being good it's not presented "directly" to you, cutscenes only gives small bites of the plot, most of it is told by exploration and investigations of the rooms, interactive objectives and npcs. Eventually you find more about Dante's family, and his father's role in the past.
Each enemy in the game feels like a threat, unlike the other games where their numbers ruin what makes them so distinct, what i mean is every enemy in dmc 1 feels like it can hurt you and isn't just a filler placed in the room along with 10 others.
The characters are great and Dante being somewhat more serious in this one was great especially after dmc 3. Trish was a good character aswell.
The Soundtrack is absolutely amazing i can't belive a game from 2001 was able to produce such a masterpiece soundtrack.
This game feels like it hasn't aged a single second, its a classic by the opening chapter alone.

Conclusion

Atmosphere 10/10
Gameplay 6/10
Soundtrack 10/10
Story 8/10

Devil May Cry 2

Certified waste of time.
Dante is good and cool and he shoots guns game good, Real gamer's don't skip dmc 2.
In all seriousness, this game is the BEST example of how NOT to do a sequel, i can't belive that this game failed in EVERY way possible. After researching i can't belive someone thought it would be a good idea to not contact Kamiya and his team over a sequel, to the point where they didn't find out until the original game was being localized in Europe. This game had insane development hell with only 6 months of time. This game is SO bad you can complete the game just spamming the pistols.. this game was a waste of "effort" , as it feels like a different universe, and is never mentioned again in the other games (as far as im aware) , the soundtrack is the only thing that's actually ok in this game.
Someone who don't even play games could probaly tell it's unfinished as hell, you just teleport to different places, fight random objects, etc. EVERYTHING is really random like.. everything.
Playing this game will probaly be so boring your mental health will decline, it's your choice if you want to play this crap but TRUST ME you are not missing out on anything if you skip this one, and this is coming from someone who don't skip sequels with bad reputation and is a completionist.
Most people haven't even made it past the helicopter boss, or even the second campaign (probaly don't even know about it). This is probaly the most boring and forgettable game i've ever played. R.I.P to the people who stopped playing DMC after dmc 2 as it probaly left them with a bad taste.

Conclusion

Atmosphere 1/10
Gameplay 2/10
Soundtrack 6/10
Story 0/10

Devil May Cry 3

Certified Masterpiece.
This game blew me away after i played dmc 2, suddenly this one had stylish/smooth combat, great story, great level design, you can also replay missions anytime you want, recycled stuff is done in an intelligent manner and the soundtrack is 10/10. This sh*t is good trust me. It totally kicked the bad taste of sh*t that dmc 2 gave me. The story introduced Our legendary fan favorite Vergil and Lady. The game had some of the most entertaining and over the top action in all of gaming imo. The bosses were great to fight and actually was challenging, i love all the bosses in this game, one of my favorite moments is when Dante beats the two giants guarding some door and when he defeats them they want to be his weapon and he tells them they are allowed if they shut up. One of the moments of all time.
In terms of gameplay DMC 3 is the best one by FAR, introducing STYLES like the trickster, swordsmaster, gunslinger and royalguard. I could continue with how amazing the gameplay is but im soon near max words on this review.
Dante and Vergil is some of the best video game rivalry i've seen. Lady is also a great character who has problems with her anger and sorrow in the story with someone called Arkham. She fits in well with the story and is a great addition to the cast, without her the story would feel kinda empty. Also the scene where Dante meets Lady for the first time was really funny and great.
Dmc 3 is a really special game, by the end when you are fighting along Vergil to take down Arkham, the music, the setting and everything was perfect down to the last minute details. This game's soundtrack lives rent free in my head. It had such a good finale that i was actually sad when it ended. God everything about this game is perfect please play it.

Conclusion

Atmosphere 8/10
Gameplay 9/10
Soundtrack 10/10
Story 9/10

Note: If you plan to play these games do not play on keyboard and mouse, the keyboard support is bare bones, so you NEED a controller to play this.

Conclusion

The content remains true to the originals, isn't remastered or remade, it's just a pc port with upscaled graphics, learning curve is unforgiving for new people, graphical issues not present in ps2 versions, good game if you don't mind getting good.
As a whole i rate this collection 9/10, also im gonna name my children Devil May Cry 1 and Devil May Cry 3.
It would be 10/10 if dmc 2 didn't exist.
