Devil May Cry 5 Review (Yaerveth)
Devil May Cry 5 is the PERFECT hack-and-slash game you're searching for. Period. After a foul attempt at a reboot of the series, (which was not needed but I don't know what they were thinking at Capcom or what kind of stone they'd been smoking back then) the original Devil May Cry story made its comeback with a wonderful presentation back in 2018. I'll be honest with you. Although 2018 was literally the best year of my life and being rewarded with a fifth entry to one of my favorite series after a long hiatus, I was disappointed with the fact that they refused to ditch the modern western-looking douchebag style in DMC5. However, they managed to find perfect matches for each character; therefore, they all grew on me with time. I still prefer the anime style over what we have, though. So, what do we have in DMC5? Let me explain.
Nero is the lead character again along with another mysterious protagonist called V who can control Shadow and mini-Griffon as well as Nightmare from the very first Devil May Cry game and guess what? They made Griffon such a funny character this time around and his snide comments add a charming aura to the whole vibe. The demon king is being resurrected and it's up to Dante, Nero, and V to stop him from gaining full control over the human world. Sounds like the first game, right? Not exactly. There's a pretty good climax scene hence, I'll leave that to you to find out. There are lots of fan services from the first and third games, though. There are many recurring enemies from the previous entries that we didn't see in 4. I don't know if I should reveal too much but I'll stop with the enemies for now. You probably noticed by now that Nero lacks his demon arm and he's dependent on Devil Breakers made by Nico - a new character that's been introduced with this game who is apparently the granddaughter of the gunsmith who made Dante's beloved guns Ebony & Ivory. As you have already guessed, the lack of a demon arm changes his gameplay dramatically. Instead of grabbing and performing cool finishers on your enemies, you have unique Devil Breakers that act in different ways. Don't worry, you'll be rewarded with your devil arm after you beat the game once as well as something extra *wink*. However, it doesn't add much to style points thus, you can't really rule out the Devil Breakers. Also, the replica of the Buster Arm deals more damage compared to the original which was quite strange but acceptable by gameplay standards.
V is a summoner, and it is quite strange for a Devil May Cry game to have a summoner character, but you'll be surprised to see that using demons to fight demons actually works wonders. Initially, I hated him due to not knowing what to do exactly but he became one of my favorite characters to play as on my second playthrough. He also has very cool finishers and building style is quite easy while playing as him. Dante is the same Dante we all know and love with different weapons and more refined gameplay; therefore, I find it unnecessary to write long paragraphs that describe his gameplay since I have already done that in my previous reviews. He and Vergil have Sin Devil Trigger states this time and they are basically much more powerful Devil Trigger forms. SDT was actually first introduced in Devil May Cry 2, but your HP had to be extremely low to trigger it and for obvious reasons, not many people remember it.
Vergil... Oh man, Vergil. He is literally the embodiment of power in this game. Despite being added a year later as a playable character, he didn't disappoint. His move set is not much different from his DMC4 version, but he's much more refined this time around. Do I even need to mention how cool his theme song is? Speaking of which, this game's soundtrack is exceptionally good and there's a good diversity as well, meaning you don't hear the same song repeating over and over again whenever you initiate the combat. Well, for the most part, you do but some missions have fixed music tracks, unlike the majority of previous DMC games. I believe they also made use of dynamic music as your style meter gets higher. Finally, good bits of DmC: Devil May Cry made it into this one such as style announcers and action cameras. You can even set your own style announcers, title announcers, and different music tracks from the previous games. Before I forget, Lady and Trish are not playable, unlike DMC4SE unfortunately. Characters from the anime such as Morrison and Patty make a return as well which was a surprise on my part.
Oh, and most of the stuff that is being sold as DLC is unlockable through normal gameplay. Unless you're a casual gamer, I wouldn't recommend paying money for them. Special Edition extras such as the Legendary Dark Knight Mode and Turbo are not available by default sadly but can be implemented by downloading additional mods. Unfortunately, it's not possible for us PC players to get Ray Tracing. Someone also told me before that DMC4 is the hardest game to obtain all achievements but this one requires you to get S ranks from all missions on Hell and Hell mode. You be the judge of that.
TL;DR
The best hack-and-slash game I’ve ever played in my life and a proper continuation of the original Devil May Cry storyline with an unexpected climax. It borrows the good bits of DmC: Devil May Cry and adds a new playable summoner-type character called V which will grow on you if you let him. I don’t think I need to mention how good the soundtrack is as well. Some Special Edition extras such as the Legendary Dark Knight mode, Turbo, and Ray Tracing are not available for PC but you can add LDK and Turbo by downloading mods.
