Devil May Cry 5 Review (Echos)
This is a Devil May Cry Game. It is the epiphany of all things teenager and I absolutely loved everything about it.
The game-play is fun. The story is stupid but charming and silly in its own way because of how self aware it is. The combat is easy to pick up and hard to master, with so much variety in combos, unlocks and characters providing a ton of skill expression. The optimisation of this game is so unbelievably smooth, you'd think capcom had to do a demonic blood pact with virgil himself to make this RE engine as good as it is.
What impressed me the most though is how phenomenal the cut scenes were. The amount of detail put into the characters, the environments and the designs are truly top of the line for this genre (and any game really). This game genuinely has some of the best cinematic choreography and directing I’ve seen. It is incredibly impressive and hats off to the talented and passionate people behind this game. They clearly put their hearts into it, and it shows.
My only nitpick with this game is how the level design hasn’t evolved much since the previous entries. This franchise has always had very linear design that boils down to: move forward, kill everything and repeat until the credits roll. I was hoping DMC 5 would have innovated or changed this formula at least a little but it hasn't.
Furthermore, the environments in this game aren’t that varied as they are exclusively made up of two locations, London and the demon realm. they do vary slightly in color but overall look and feel the same. This makes all the levels feel repetitive and undiscernible from each other.
It’s a real shame too considering how impressive the art direction of this game is. Having more variety in locations would have been such a great way for the art team to flex their talent and creativity. These issues are minor nitpicks though, and they did not take away from the overall experience, especially when compared to everything this game does right.
This game slaps like no tomorrow and it’s a must play for any fan of hack n slash games. As a big DMC fan, this game has hands down the best gameplay and boss fights out of all of them and they make for an endlessly replayable experience.
And because of that, I recommend DMC 5 to longtime fans of the franchise and newcomers alike.
