I first picked up the game back in late 2018 a few weeks after Forsaken. during that first year it was instantly my favourite game. it was flush with content that would keep you busy for hours. Red War was an amazing campaign to go through, CoO and Warmind were decent, but not horrid. Forsaken had an amazing story and added lots of content.
Then the downfall happened with Shadowkeep and Bungo's selfishness when the left Activision-Blizzard. Shadowkeep was not worth the price for what it offered. it was a clunky campaign and didn't add much to the game, and not to mention them transitioning to a seasonal model. the seasonal stories had a decent basis to make the story great, but 3/4 of those seasons got very boring very quick.
Then shit hit the fan imo with Beyond Light. with the wave of a finger Bungo deleted over half of the game tossing it into the DCV, and with it the identity the game had. the seasons in BL were ok at best, and felt game killing at worst. Most player's favorite guns in the game were vaulted and rendered useless because of LL requirements for PvP and other modes. Stasis ran rampant in Crucible rendering the mode nearly unplayable for the casual player.
when WQ came out, it was an amazing story and the content it provided was worth what they were charging for it. it felt like were were back on track trying to save the Solar System from a powerful threat instead of climbing a red tower, or playing in the snow waiting for something to happen. the seasonal content in this year was ok, with one of the seasons (Plunder) being the worst performing time for the game at that point. basically half the steam playerbase left the game that season.
in an attempt to redeem themselves they revealed Lightfall and the upcoming subclass Strand. they marketed it as a big and bountiful expansion with lots to do, major expansion on the lore and the new threat we learned of known as The Witness, only for the devs to piss in our hands and expecting players to shovel out $80+ for that golden shower. Neomuna was empty and felt quarter baked. Osiris was whiny the whole time, Nimbus felt like a modern Marvel character (all crap humour and no contribution to the story). the only good character Rohan was killed off halfway through for no reason at all.
after the horrid launch and response from the community they promised that they would correct it and give us the answers we wanted, the biggest one being "What is the Veil?". we are almost halfway through the year and despite giving us a weekly story/ lore entries regarding Neomuna and Veil experiments, we still have ZERO clue what it is or what it does. also with the current season (Season of the Deep) the servers have never performed worse, almost daily you'll error code Weasel and DC from the game. servers go down almost twice a week it feels at this point. not to mention that the devs have gotten more and more greedy this season by changing the API to things like the Eververse Calendar no longer is able to tell you when a new cosmetic item is going to be available for Bright Dust.
at the point of writing this Solstice 2023 is active. it is the exact same event as last year, with poorly designed armour compared to previous Solstice events. Bonfire Bash is a buggy mess that no one wanted to come back. PvP matchmaking is at its worst point yet where as soon as you have a positive K/D you will be paired with the sweatiest people imaginable. if its not sweats, its someone cheating, Lag switching, or using a Xim/ Chronus device. the devs at this point expect the entire playerbase to purchase all the DLC and season passes as the content you get as a free player is almost nothing. you'll have almost no idea what the fuck is going on in the story, 90% of the guns and exotics are unobtainable unless you shovel out $300+.
instead of playing this heap of garbage made by 900+ people, i recommend anything else.
