Death's Door Review (TickingOfTheClocks)
I have played this game for 83 hours and 100%-ed it twice, so I feel it would be remiss of me not to leave some sort of review.
You wouldn’t expect a game called “Death’s Door” to be charming, but it really is. The art style, isometric and elegantly simple, is very endearing. I found all the characters thoroughly delightful and was always happy to meet new ones or reunite with ones I had met previously The music is lovely to listen to and made me enjoy roaming around and exploring just that little bit more. The environments are beautiful, well-designed and varied, and while I know backtracking isn't for everyone, I was personally always delighted to return to familiar areas with new abilities that let me explore more. I found the combat system fun and challenging. This seems to be a point other reviewers disagree on, so in the interest of transparency I will say that I'm not exactly a pro gamer. I will freely admit to not being super great at games. I died and had to re-traverse areas kind of a lot. I absolutely understand how that might put some people off. But for me personally, I was so utterly charmed by every aspect of the game that I wanted to keep going, no matter how many times a boss or an enemy might kick my ass. I do also really like that you aren't able to heal in fights. Again, that is an aspect that is certainly not for everyone, and there were times(especially early on)I was rather frustrated by it. But personally, I found that it kept the combat engaging.
I also rather enjoyed the story of the game. I'm pretty sentimental at heart, so the way this story treats life and death and choice did affect me. I don't quite know how to articulate my full feelings, with or without spoilers, but suffice to say I really liked it.
I'm glad I played this game. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it most certainly is mine. It's become something of a comfort game for me, since whenever I go back to it, it always puts a smile on my face(hence the 83 hours haha).
I don't have much else to say. I had a great time playing it, I really fell in love with the world and the characters, and it makes me happy.
And you get to play as a cute lil crow who can, if you so choose, wield a great big sword. And I think that's neat.
