Death's Door Review (King Bradley)
Genre: Hack & Slash/Souls-like
This is a really simple souls-like game, where nothing stands out except amazing soundtracks, yet it's a very fun game.
This game is about Crow who's job is to reap souls and get them back to the vault. However, her soul gets lost and Crow needs to find out what happened. Without spoiling the story, it is pretty simple and wasn't very interesting to me, but it's okay enough for this type of game. Also, there aren't some lore tablets like in Dark Souls to help you understand the game better.
Combat is simple, you have a starting sword and a few more weapons that you can obtain through the game and you also get magic as you progress through the game. There isn't a jump in the game, so all you can do is dash/dodge and spam your attack. There are only 4 spells in this game: flame spell, bomb spell, hookshoot spell, and arrow spell. I personally think that only flame spell is a real spell here, and it's also extremely overpowered, while the arrow spell is as the name says just arrow, and bomb and hookshoot spells are just tools to get you through the game (you can also use bomb as a weapon). As you progress through the game you will collect the element called "soul energy" which lets you upgrade Reaper's abilities. You can upgrade these abilities back in the Soul Vault which is the beginning area of the game. Traveling through the game is pretty easy since you will unlock many fast travel locations through the game, which are reaper's doors, however, you can't just instantly travel where you want, you need to enter the correct door, but they are all in the same place, in the above mentioned Soul Vault.
There are around 10-15 bosses in this game. Half of them are the same repeating knights, which you fight to upgrade your spells. As usual in these souls-like games, there are 3-4 main bosses that you need to beat before fighting the final boss/bosses. Here as well there are 3 different bosses that you need to beat, each ruling their own domain. I have beaten most bosses, except the last one which you need to beat to get 100% in the game, and they weren't very hard compared to what I am used to in these games. They were just the right difficulty. In fact, the whole game is not that hard, it feels just the right difficulty.
The world is not that big and can be easily accessed thanks to portals. But it is a nice world, and I enjoyed exploring it. The soundtracks are amazing, probably the best part of the game. It's not a very long game, took me around 12 hours to beat it.
Pros:
- Beautiful soundtracks
- Simple and fun gameplay
- The world is nice
- Just the right amount of difficulty
Neutral:
- Simple story
- Bosses are just okay
- Spells are pretty simple
Verdict:
This is a pretty simple souls-like game, with a beautiful soundtracks. There is nothing amazing about this game, except those soundtracks, but it was really fun to play. I would recommend this game if you want a short, polished hack & slash game with souls-like feeling, but don't expect too much. The game is the definition of simple, but simple it does good.
