Dead by Daylight Review (Dylie)

I'll say this right out the gate, I'll probably continue to play this game, as it's one of my favorites and anyone who knows me knows how much I enjoy it and the content surrounding it. I've played it for a couple of years now, and I don't plan to stop any time soon.

This game is honestly amazing. It's a super fun concept, and I think it actually has an amazing execution in most cases. The killer vs survivor gameplay is awesome, and it may sound simple, it has many complexities to it that make it super interesting and diverse. Perks, different killer powers, items, addons, offerings, maps, they all come into play in every match and it feels so satisfying to be able to recognize these aspects of the game as you play more and more.

The devs do make mistakes here and there, but they also really deliver on things when it counts. Each new entry to the character roster always sparks a massive amount of excitement, and it's always unique and interesting. They are attentive to the community when changes need to be made, and do their best to make sure the game is balanced. A lot of people complain about the game's balancing, but frankly, they do a better job than a lot of other game companies I've seen, especially when you consider they didn't set out to make a game with a highly competitive environment, despite the game mode being a VS mode.

This is unfortunately where I get to the part of this game that makes me question playing it. The community. If you ever want to sit down after a long day and relax and play a game, do NOT launch this one. Because no one else is ever going to relax. Whether your being slugged and tunnelled off hook every game as survivor, or flashlight blinded and tea bagged as killer, this game does not let up at all with how everyone is treating this fictional video game like the olympics. This is beyond the scope of any competitive game I've ever seen.

I do sometimes make my grievances known about certain matches, most I'll ever say is that someone played really sweaty, or that it was a boring match for me as I barely got to do anything. Sometimes I've had nice interactions too, even when it starts out negatively. But other times... oh boy.

I have friends who are hard core targeted just for being homosexual. I've had people bleed me out for multiple minutes, for no other reason than they think it's "funny". I've had people tea bag at every single pallet or window, like they've made some grand gesture of amazing gameplay that elevates them beyond anyone else. But if they happen to die, then it was me giving into their taunting, and they still win because I am a "butthurt loser". They always have to win, they can never just treat the video game as a video game. They make it personal.

Win. That is the word that everyone craves with a burning passion when they play this game. Hell, I fall into that trap sometimes, but I don't think the person on the other end is always a bad person, or that they're doing it to hurt me specifically. But I also have trouble giving them the benefit of the doubt when they just bring the same meta build every game, or don't let anyone else do their own thing. People just use every little advantage they can get to steamroll their opponent. Maybe it's just that I'm not a competitive gamer. This is the only game I play that is hyper competitive. Maybe I should just stick to customs.

People just take this game too seriously. Maybe that's what I'm doing when I write this too, but it's mainly because it's one of the few games I can get my friends together to play on. I've got stuff happening in real life that is stressful enough, and I just wanna relax after the long day. I'm finding myself enjoying the game less and less, but sometimes it feels like an addiction unfortunately.
