Days Gone Review (M4F10S0)
MC vs Freaks
Welcome to Oregon, where many tourist routes and scenic roads await you to enjoy your walks and bike rides. Stunning views from the top of mountains, friendly people and fresh air. So, pack your backpack and visit this beautiful state. Well, this would be a reality if one experiment with a new virus had not failed. Currently, Oregon is a place you definitely don't want to go to. Freaks are everywhere, people turn on each other, and dangerous animals try to hunt you down.
The Story
The main protagonist is Deacon St. John a.k.a Deek, who is a member of the motorcycle club, along with his brother from another mother, William "Boozer" Gray. When the apocalypse started, many people turned into zombies called freaks. Deek, his wife Sarah, and Boozer wanted to go somewhere safe. They caught a National Emergency Response Organization – NERO helicopter, but there was only room for two. So, Deek decided to put his wife on board and stayed with Boozer. After two years, the main story starts. You will travel with Boozer around Oregon, try to survive and find out if Sarah is still alive.
World
The map consists of six regions that you unlock by completing story missions. They are not big and could be more diverse, but they are fine. Every part of the map contains one camp where you can spend credits for your loadout, collectables that will teach you about some character's background story, or you can read about the history and landmarks of Oregon. Also, there are infestation zones with Freaks nests and caves where hordes hide. You can find NERO research places and checkpoints that will give you injectors. They will improve your health, stamina, and focus. Each region has ambush camps of enemy clans. When you clear them, you can use these places as a fast travel point or change your loadout in a small underground bunker. By doing all this stuff, you will gain XPs that you can use in the skill tree to improve your combat, survival or weapons skills.
Your Motorcycle, Your Life
No worries, it is not a walking simulator. Your main and only transportation to anywhere is a motorcycle. It requires fuel and repairs if you are a bad rider. Especially in the beginning, without any upgrades, you must drive carefully. You do not want to end up with a broken motorbike in the middle of freaks. You will unlock upgrades for your ride in camps by completing main and side missions. I recommend you buy a better fuel tank first. You will be able to travel further without refuelling often. If your plan screws up and you run out of gas, you can still move your bike with legs. It is slow, and freaks will catch you. So try to find a fuel can or pump as fast as possible. Downhills can help you gain some speed. When you crash or bandits set up an ambush on you, your bike can be totalled. You can repair damage with scraps found under car hoods or lying on the ground. Keep your stash full of it. You never know when you will need it. Crafting explosives, distractions, and repairing melee weapons requires scraps as well.
Encampments
They are places where you can refill ammo, buy upgrades and weapons, and repair or refuel your motorcycle for credits gained by story and side missions. Leaders of camps will give you jobs, and most of them are the same: go somewhere and eliminate someone. After completing a few, you will be bored, but you know the drill: "Nose down, work hard, they feed ya." You will get credits, and raise your trust level with camps, which will unlock more items in shops. If you need more bucks and want higher respect in camps, sell bounties from freaks or meat from animals.
Freaks, Freaks Everywhere
The most annoying thing in the game is the respawning of freaks. Let me explain it. After clearing a small zone, you start looting items. Suddenly, you hear screaming freaks, look around, and they are everywhere. How!? They respawned here! It doesn’t happen every time, but Murphy’s law works well here. Freaks, wolves or bears will respawn in situations when you really don't want to fight more attackers. Yeah, you read it right, respawn works on animals too.
Another thing that bothers me during gameplay, especially in fights, is flying ragdolls. Sometimes a dead body takes off to the Moon and then returns to Oregon. When you see this bug for the first time, it can be funny, but after 20 or more times it is not. Devs should have fixed it.
Visuals
Visuals impressed me with high-quality textures and scenic views from the hills. The game still looks good nowadays and offers many situations where you will open photo mode, which is well-made. It has many settings that will help you make a perfect screenshot. When it starts raining or snowing, you will open it for sure. Also, facial animations in the cutscenes are detailed and look believable. Only broken ragdolls and flashlight light coming from nowhere spoil the immersion of the atmosphere. Deek looks like a magician when the light comes from the middle of his body without any emitting point.
Road to 100%
As I mentioned earlier, the map contains collectables and other things to do. You can try clearing all hordes and ambush camps or challenge yourself in New Game Plus and Challenge Mode. Clearing hordes is great fun. You need to prepare a lot of ammunition, traps and everything that will help you stop those massive counts of freaks.
New Game Plus offers one new weapon that is useless, in my opinion. You can craft special ammo for it, like for a crossbow, but a .50 calibre sniper rifle in the main game is better. It can kill anyone with one shot. Challenge mode offers 12 short missions, like clear a horde, race on a motorbike, surviving a freaks attack, and so on. You must do everything perfectly if you want a gold score.
Conclusion
Days Gone has some cons that reduce the overall rate, but it is still a good game. I can recommend it to you if you like zombie apocalypse games. You will get 30-60 hours of playtime or even more if you decide to complete everything that the game offers. So, start your motorbike and begin your adventure in Oregon. The game has good lore, and I would like to play the prequel and sequel that would answer unclear questions.
