Date Everything! Review (CapnDustBunny)

okay so I'm going to be completely blunt and honest here, there will be spoilers as a result and it will be long. I'm not 100% sure if I even do recommend this game or not and it's not only because of the bugs I've found but also the content itself.

The game was okay, once you get past how funny it is that you're romancing the objects in your home, you tend to notice how lacking the game actually is. It feels like quantity was heavily prioritised over quality, one of the devs boasted about how they have almost the same amount of words as Baldur's gate 3 and while that would be an impressive feat it just doesn't seem to really matter here when you can end an entire route with someone by clicking 3 options in one convo with them.
A dev also mentioned that there weren't any small characters which again isn't true, an example of this is Chance. I adore Chance and I really wish I actually got to know him instead of just finding out he likes DND and then we fall in love because I play a campaign for him, it really bothers me that's what I get from him while with other characters like Beau I go on a whole adventure with that spans across more than 2 days and has me interacting with other characters in the game, that makes Chance a small character.
It's not even just that that bothers me either, even characters where you have longer interactions with lack any real substance, on average you get 4 interactions with them and that's it, it's not enough time to actually form an attachment with the character. They all just end up lacking substance like that and are rather just one note. Honestly all the advertisements I ever seen for this game are mostly about what voice actors they have and it's not bad necessarily but I think we've all learned that famous people doesn't exactly guaranteed quality content. I feel like they could've achieved more with maybe like half the characters so we can actually interact with them and get to know them instead of just showing up and "fixing" them or doing something for them and having that determine a relationship.
I was so excited for this game that I even bought the DLC before the game was even out and I wish I hadn't because all it showed me was the potential this game could've had, Lucinda was perfect with so much personality and such an interesting story that after I completed her route everyone else to me was boring. Honestly towards the end of the game I was so bored I was pretty much skimming over everything I was reading because it was all the same things with a different coloured ribbon slapped on. Even the ending of the game was very much like "oh okay" like coooool I kissed a bunch of people? Like that was the ending? I just get to sit here pretty much reading over every characters lives and what they amounted to while having a pitiful "they came by and you fucked" or a "they love you though" once in a while?
The bugs too were a huge problem, there wasn't an insane amount but the issue is the bugs that are there ruin the game. I had characters hate me the first time I spoke to them (nightmare), I had characters where the entire first meeting was skipped and the conversations would continue with their name just staying as ???? (Daisuke), Characters I couldn't even realise because it was bugged saying they were needed for another characters route who I had already finished and even realised (Ben-Hwa), Characters who I couldn't finish the routes for because all they did was repeat the same thing over and over again with no progression no matter what I did (Skylar, Phoenicia, Scandalabra)
Then we get into a whole other issue with the game straight up lying in the tutorial, you're told SPEC points aren't something that will lock you out of endings or collectables so it's okay to not click them but that isn't the case at all. I spoke to Washford the second day and because I didn't have a stupid amount of SMARTS I couldn't say I read Macbeth which led to him hating me on our second meeting. I didn't get an option. I was locked out of an ending between Washford and Drysdale as a result, furthermore picking a SPEC option with Jean caused him to hate me as well no matter what option I picked following it which also contradicts when Skylar says in her help menu that they're never bad and that you should always choose them!
All in all it's not an entirely bad game but if you're expecting any actual story apart from what feels like a oneshot fanfic where the characters both meet and fall in love by the end of it, I wouldn't recommend this game. I played it to completion since I spent money on it but would I play it again? Probably not. If you want to just play a dating sim that's the equivalent of speed dating then this game is great for that.
Also if you can, get the DLC, you get free SPEC points and Lucinda is probably the best character in the game just like she claims to be.
If you read this review to completion then I'm sorry for the mess that it is and I hope you have a wonderful day/night lol
