Custom Mech Wars Review (-Lonely Pineapple-)

Short and sweet EDF-esque mech power fantasy game that can appease that small itch you have for both customizing a mech and blowing stuff up. A lot of the negative reviews here seem to point to it being clunky, but it isn't as bad as others may have stated and you can easily either edit the options or get used to the handling or even both, and that's coming from someone who finished and still enjoying the game. Sadly the MP aspect got hampered by the negative reviews, but hey, you can play this with your friends or in offline SP.
Now, this game isn't perfect by any means, but it's a fun game for mecha customization enthusiasts and especially in multiplayer if you have people to play with. Remember that this isn't AC and isn't developed by triple A studios, so play it not for the realism, but for the power fantasy, the customization, and the shenanigans you can have with your friends, if you even have any.
Just like any other game out there, this game has it's own pros and cons so I'll be giving mine as per my experience finishing the game.

Pros:
- it's a mecha power fantasy, blowing stuff up is always fun
- it has a lot of customization. While having weight as a limiting stat, the game still allows you to go full ham with a lot of weapons. Just slap a lot of guns, missiles, cannons, bazookas, armor parts anywhere on your mech (*cough "crotch cannons")
- Three tiers of part sizes, allowing you to create a small nimble unit or a very large tanky and slow unit, or just a mech for the memes
- Parts level up in this game, so grinding stages will always be worth it, and specific parts with the same SIZE and QUALITY share the same part level. (ie. If you have a level 50 of a certain assault rifle, all copies of that specific assault rifle are level 50 as well)
- Accessories aren't just accessories, they have a point in terms of defense, they get destroyed when they get damaged enough and can protect your main parts.
- You can use up to 5 mechs you've built in one mission, incentivizing you to make a lot, and you can either switch to them or deploy them once your current one gets destroyed. Note that you can't use two at the same time, because only you can pilot the mechs you make, even in multiplayer.
- Singleplayer mode is offline (this should not even be here, but with many games requiring you to go online even in SP, this is a Pro that a dwindling number games have)
Cons:
- Getting your leg or torso destroyed results in the destruction of your mech, which is understandable, but still frustrating when most attacks are focused on both.
- The ally NPC AI is what I would say the clunkiest part of the game, since like EDF's NPCs, your allies will always follow and group to you, but while it's the same in this game, both you and your ally NPCs take damage when you bump into each other... and there have been many times that I accidentally kill them because they group too close to my M-sized tank, and that's not me going out of my way to crush them, just them having a death wish sticking close to my oversized treads.
- MELEE is very risky since it is an EDF-esque game after all, meaning, you WILL get swarmed but small and large robots alike, and they most likely will have the weapons to tear you to shreds, especially cannon fire. And it is not as visually-appealing to look at compared to raining things with bullets, so if you'd rather play a mecha game with visually-appealing melee, this probably isn't your game.
- Terrain graphics may not be that great, but when you've played EDF, you should be used to repetitive maps.
- Some occasional boosters glitches when using tank treads on uneven terrain causing you to be unable to lift off which usually happens on M or L-sized mechs in mountain stages

Things to remember that aren't necessarily a pro/con per se:
- This game mostly lacks any sort of wide area AoE explosions. As an EDF enjoyer, this might come off as a con, but considering this game's enemies has a much more frequent reliance on missiles, you probably don't want it to have AoE in this game. You can equip a lot of missiles yourself, sure, but remember the enemies also have them in spades, and missiles aren't long range in this game so you can't just sit in the back while spamming it. So personally, while I am kind of sad with the lack of AoE explosions, it would also likely get very frustrating if all those missiles thrown at me have AoE.
- This game CAN be played in melee even in the highest difficulties, but again, just like EDF, it requires a lot of skill, and booster timing, because when you run out of boost in the middle of a group, you're not getting out of that. So it's really up to you if you're willing to suffer that frustration for the memes.
- This game is a grind, but at least it's not weapon RNG grind. I can understand that not everyone likes to grind.
- You'll be spending as much time or even more in customization than in the map (which is fairly common in games that offer a lot of customization). Personally this is my favorite part, since any time I obtain a nice part or weapon, I directly go to the hangar to equip it.
- This game has limited ammo weapons (except for melee, obviously). Yes, unlike EDF's infinite ammo weapons (save for AR and some unreloadable Fencer gears) where you are only hampered by reload time, you actually run out of ammo in this one. This encourages you to use the "critical" function to allow separately shooting weapons that have a low ammo count such as a certain tank cannon series of weapon in the game.

Conclusion:
So all in all, it's a fun game to play with friends if you have an ounce of patience to get to know the game yourself, and it's very enjoyable just playing with friends while showing off the absurd monstrosities you made.
For those who enjoy mecha customization for the funsies, this game will scratch that itch for you, and for those players who are heavily spoiled by triple A games or those expecting this one to be like AC, you probably won't enjoy this one.
