Custom Mech Wars Review (Acierocolotl)
This is not a good game. You can find a lot to dislike. But yet, it's a good game. There's a contradiction that's going to take some paragraphs to unravel.
It's an awful lot like EDF. Here's a threat, only you can save the world, etc., etc. Get to shootin'! Do all the missions, go do 'em again on harder difficulties. Except instead of character classes, you'll assemble yourself a giant robot out of parts. There's a video with all sorts of wacky robots on display.
You can't build those robots right away, though. You can't really build any of them.
You'll start with a small selection of parts. A couple legs, a couple torsos, a few arms and a head to clap on them, and a small smattering of guns to get in on there. You'll unlock parts as you play, so maybe if you're patient you can build the drill dick bot or whatever tickles your fancy.
My robot is literally a sportscar onto which I've stapled a handful of mech-sized guns. The guns are as big as the car. It'll do.
Annoyingly, there's a censor in the robot creator so I wasn't allowed to create a robot named Jagbutt. Jagbu tt also out, but Jagbu_tt was. Ha! Don't tell the developers, as I have a lot of bu_tt robots to build.
The controls are... console-ish and a little janky. There's sliders to rotate parts, but if you use your mouse the rotations don't rotate. Keyboard only, folks.
The game has no English voiceover. There's translations that appear in a box as you go about your fighting business, but frankly, I was too busy flying around with my guns-on-a-car Jagbu_tt to really notice much of it. Evil robots I guess? Okay.
EDF did not set a blazingly high standard for graphical fidelity so far. Yet this game comes up short of that standard. Well, it's all about the robots, true enough, but since buildings are there to be shot I'd like to see them shatter, or crumble, and leave a heap of rubble... instead of vibrate while sinking into the earth, leaving nothing behind but a flat patch.
I've only done a few missions, and combats haven't felt... frenzied in the way that EDF has managed. I'm going to play more of this all the same though. My ambition is a quadrupedal robotic jaguar. Like, my avatar, you know? Robot cats, maaaan. That's for me. This may be some time coming.
Oh yeah, coop. I mean, it's just as janky as EDF is for this, with the weird lobby thing and all that. Looking forward to giving that a go when I get more work done. But for now, I owed it to you to get some inky words out on this game. But frankly, this is mostly a game about building stupid robots and making your friends look at them. Or building nice-looking robots and making friends look at them... while they do stupid things like staple legs to the roof of a freight truck and hang arms off the kneecaps.
Either way, I'll see you out there some time. Jagbu_tt may need help saving the world. It's just a car with guns, after all.
