Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course Review (Zer0)
More Cuphead, more fun.
Not much more to say. If you enjoyed the core game, this DLC will be right up your alley. Observations made by other reviewers which appear to be true:
-The new content is, on average, more difficult than in the core game. A big part of this increase in challenge is due to making the screen 'busier', meaning there's even more to keep track of. A couple of encounters (Snow Cult Scuffle and High-Noon Hoopla come to mind) have articles permanently displayed (candles or cacti, for example) which can temporarily conceal some of the smaller enemies or environmental hazards. It doesn't happen often, but when you bump into an icicle person who was hiding behind a candle flame, it's a bit aggravating;
-The new content seems designed with Ms. Chalice in mind. She's a neat new character and fun to play, simultaneously easier to use in some respects and more difficult in others. For example, she has a double-jump... but she really needs it, as her single jump covers noticeably less space than Cuphead or Mugman's jump. Yes, it can help her cover more ground... at the expense of an extra input AND knowing the timing for the jump (which of course changes for each phase of each encounter). Tough? No, but it does take some getting used to;
-There seem to be no run-and-gun levels. As one of the 17 people who enjoyed them, their absence has been felt. There is another flight level, however. While not necessarily a mark against, I happened to be one of the 5 people who did not enjoy the flight levels... so the inclusion of more time in a little plane but no time a-runnin' and a-gunnin' made me sad. Only a little, tho; hard to stay sad playing a game like this.
Turns out I had plenty to say. What made me think otherwise? Inkwell Isle IV is every bit as colorful and wonderfully over the top as the others. Animations are fluid, colors rich and vivid, the fights are hilarious, the music is outstanding. Another knockout from Studio MDHR. For $7.99 U.S., how do you go wrong? Thumbs-up, 9/10. Recommended for: fans of platformers; lovers of boss battlers; everyone who enjoyed the core game.
edit: i may have underestimated how much i thought to say at the outset, but i won't make the mistake of thinking i don't need space for an edit or seven. and there it is! needed it for the strike commands. go team me!
