I would say that Crime Secrets: Crimson Lily is an independent sequel of the 9 Clues series. Indeed, the game feature also a female detective that will make her investigation in order to solve a case. And independent because 9 Clues series and Crime Secrets series? are not made by the same developer and are each unique.
As I warned you previously there isn’t any additional story: only one short main story.
For the story : you are a female detective on vacation at the mountains but as soon as she arrived her vacation are shortened by a grim murder. She will then lead an investigation and try to stop that insane murderer that freeze its victims to death. She will slowly discover that the city wasn’t a peaceful place at it seems.
The game has two graphics issue that I’ll talk in the (*) point at the end. And you need to know that the game is set in a surrealistic story as well as some puzzles are a little surrealistic.
As every Artifex Mundi game you can move freely in different area (the surrounding area of the hotel) and need to solve some puzzles and find all objects in hidden objects scenes. The game has (different difficulties? and) a guest feature: every one of the family can play an independent save and resume the game where they left it. When you first play the game you’ll have a notebook where you have all your objectives as well as all your notes. You also have a map to not get lost and you may be able to fast travel with it too. Adding to that you’ll have a hint button that will help you in many ways but be warned that you may not use it in any puzzle or hidden object scene (HOS) or investigation scene (IS). Hints can be used to know where you need to go, where is the next interaction or to show an object or clue in an HOS or IS or to skip a puzzle. To conclude this part, you’ll also have an inventory to store useful items through your journey.
Puzzles are fine, different and perhaps short. There is only the classical Hidden objects scene (HOS) as far as I remember. The one where you need to find objects hidden with the help of their name. Colored names mean that you have to interact directly with the scene or use an item in the scene.
As some other Artifex Mundi game : you’ll have to find collectibles scattered across the game. (Origamis and snowflakes) The only bad thing is you can’t track them (how many you’ve found) and can’t see them after (like a showcase) …
One of the very good thing of this game is that there are 2 unique features you won’t find in any other Artifex Mundi game (except some games) :
• You’ll have several Investigation Scene (IS) to solve in two steps. (a remastered version of the IS of 9 clues series)
• And a smart combine or interact feature for some specific items (same as Grim Legends 3)
The first step of an Investigation scene is to find every evidence hidden in the scenery. After that your second step is to place the evidence in the right order: that’s a linear puzzle where you need to order each tile to have the correct shape. After that you unlock a cut scene where you see how the events have happened.
As I said earlier you’ll find several items where you’ll be able to interact with in your inventory. They are marked by a white plus. When you click at them you zoom in the item. They always need to be interacted and combined with another or several items to have the final item.
(*) :
The game has a few pixelated cut scenes. (one or two?) And have an annoying issue that occurs in some parts of the game: when you pick an item or a collectible the scene doesn’t change. (you got the item or collectible but you can still see it in the scene)
(#) :
First there is an issue with an achievement: “Hidden Object Master” may be granted long before you finish the story!
Now let’s get back to the missable achievements :
In addition to no skip or use any hint while playing every puzzles and Hidden objects scenes, there are a few more missable achievements. One ask you to not skip any cut scene during the whole story.
Finally, the last two one require you to find every snowflake and origami of the game.
