Cook, Serve, Delicious! Review (Nonsense Machine)
Huge fan of the original Ore No Ryomi's back from the yoyogames sandbox days. I feel Cook Serve Delicious is what Mr Chubigans envisioned ONR to be, if it was a 'real game'.
The soundtrack gets stuck in your head in a good way, there's plenty of content and unlockables, without feeling tedious. The general system of the game is solid, and I like how it incentivises you to try out all the different recipes instead of choosing a few ones you're comfortable with. I feel like by playing this I am actually improving my real-life multi-tasking skills, and having 8 serving tables during rush hour with 6 items on the menu is absolute chaos! Really having fun with it.
I haven't checked out the sequels yet, so I imagine they do a better job of this, but there is too much text to read for instructions, making the UX in the menus a little user-unfriendly (for example, when you accept a bet, or date, or VIP guest, which involves you having to have specific items on the menu, you're expected to manually exit from the menu that tells you which items you need, and then set them yourself. It would be great if there was a simple "update menu" button that puts the required items on the menu. But I justify this by just telling myself "it's like running a restaurant in real life! you have to remember a lot of things".
The positives way outweigh the negatives here. Definitely recommend this game and keen to check out the sequels!
