Cities: Skylines II - Creator Pack: Urban Promenades Review (FakeFe)
First of all, this (by the CS1 definition) is NOT a '''DLC.''' If you didn't play CS1 and don't know the lingo, then please read on or look it up before reviewing. This (and the urban promenades pack) are 'Content Creator Packs'. That means they are NOT developed by CO. They are created by CS asset creators and published by Paradox, containing ONLY assets. CO (the game developers) are only TANGENTIALLY related, so releasing both of these packs has not taken up ANY of their development time. Quick summary: this is a 'creator pack' like in CS1 (e.g. European Suburbia) and NOT a proper 'DLC' (e.g. Campus DLC).
Okay, here's a review: The pack is advertised as 60 assets, but it's actually only 36 individual building models. This is because, like all buildings in the game the level 2 and 4 buildings are the same model as the level 1 and 3 buildings, with different props. This could be called false advertising but personally I think that since they are propped differently, you can still place them next to each other without it looking like something out of a dystopian future novel, so 60 assets seems fair.
They are high quality assets too: some people have called them reskinned vanilla assets, but this is simply completely false: they are new, modelled by community asset creator Feindbold, and the turf rooves provide some nice variation in little pockets, or together for a cool new TOD area in your city. That's a positive from me.
Read on for my rant about why you should think twice before yelling at CO over this.
Before you complain about '''DLC being released before the base game is fixed''', take a moment to think: Do I actually play the CS franchise? if NO, then just don't say anything. You don't know as much as you think you do. This content was 'supposed' to release in Q4 2023 and ultimate edition customers (like me) have been waiting for it. Unfortunately, they can't really release this just for those people, so they have to release it as a CCP with a price on it too. Just bear in mind that this isn't really supposed to sell well, it's just delivering on a promise.
I would also urge anyone complaining to consider what I started my review with: this content release has made NO difference to base game fixes! It has nothing to do with Colossal Order at all: their only involvement was some intern spending an hour implementing it and making sure it works. We would have got this content sooner (remember Beach Properties?), but the backlash from those outside the CS2 community was so strong that Paradox was forced to pull it. Then, in October, when they said that they were delaying these CCPs even further to focus on the asset editor (and avoid more controversy), people came out of the woodwork again to complain about ''''broken promises :((((''''. Now they've released it, they'll get backlash from the Beach Properties haters again.
They can't win! Personally, I'm just happy to finally have the content. The game runs bad, but just about well enough on my 2020 budget gaming laptop and I'm not complaining. Conclusion: If you don't care for CS2, then either learn about it and write some genuine criticism (there's lots) or just shut up. Please. I'm trying to enjoy some cool new buildings over here.
