Cities: Skylines - Concerts Review (Maihess)
Essentially a new radio station with a new building thrown in for free. Realistically, the devs should have done things in the same way as they did with the Match Day DLC which was free, and then for those who wanted something extra, like myself, the paid European Clubs Pack was on offer. Unfortunately, the 7USD entry for this DLC is pretty steep, especially considering that full-fledged expansions only cost 13-15USD.
Moving away from the potential frustrations due to the relationship between price and quality of the content itself. I do like this DLC, in spite of the Festival Area itself being a little bland. You plop it down, decide whether or not to enact the two policies that it comes with, and set your ticket price - the rest happens on automatic, just like with stadiums. I will say that while ultimately enjoyable, the lack of direct interaction that was available in SimCity 2013 with their venues does leave me feeling a little wanting. I really did enjoy that direct interaction in deciding when to host events and what event would be hosted. You don't get this in CSL, and for me this is one of the few occasions where SC2013 really shone and categorically has one over CSL.
Getting away from that, the levelling mechanic that does come with Concerts DLC is a nice feature - by meeting the requirements to level-up, you can host larger events. If this is an example of what Colossal Order has in mind for more wide-scale deployment across the entire game, they are on to something. I am definitely in favour of CO integrating this levelling mechanic on other ploppable buildings - especially Health and Education ploppables. This is because this is another area that SC2013 categorically one over CSL - customisability and upgradability of buildings like Hospitals and Schools. A levelling mechanic would go a long way to spicing things up and making this game more engaging, by giving the player more options. You would get a choice to upgrade existing infrastructure BEFORE plopping down an entirely new building like a school or hospital, or increasing the relevant type of funding in the budget.
Before I wrap things up I would like to mention that the new radio station, and the music that it comes with is great and it does add some variety on that front, but I do accept that most players will probably prefer to mute the music and listen to their preferred means if they're chasing some variety while playing.
Ultimately, while this DLC does offer something new and enjoyable, it does leave me feeling wanting. I sincerely hope that the levelling mechanic does see game-wide deployment across suitable ploppables, and isn't restricted to the Festival Area alone. Essentially, don't give us a taste of something and not see the idea through, like with the Match Day DLC and subsequent European Clubs Pack - I was psyched at the possibility of seeing famous European football clubs featuring in CSL, but sadly it didn't happen. It is because of this I don't recommend this DLC, even though I do thoroughly support the devs.
UPDATE - 3rd December.
I do plan to make an update to this review in the coming months, due to the changes to the Concerts DLC after the most recent major update with the release of the Green Cities expansion.
