Circuit Superstars Review (llormaetS)
Excellent arcade racer that's easy to get into with a very high skill ceiling. I've played for 630 hours according to Steam but I've probably spent a good chunk of that time editing my player avatar and color schemes for my cars.
It definitely takes a bit to get used to the top-down orientation but with how small some of the tracks are and how fast some of the cars are it's necessary in order to process how quickly everything happens. Like many other racing games and real life racing in general the way you get better is to practice.
There's many cars with their own unique driving characteristics varying from being extremely fast and responsive to slow and cumbersome, and it's a ton of fun for me having to make the adjustments on the fly in online play in order to succeed. There's also just as many tracks that all the cars react differently to and it's great at constantly keeping me on my toes and seeking to improve more.
There is also an established playing community that is active and willing to help players improve on Discord. The devs also communicate their future intentions with the game and it is crossplay compatible with Xbox and Playstation, so it is a game that will stick around.
I enjoy the variety of cars, tracks, and customization options greatly and have had a blast in online play but like with any games there are some issues. Latency definitely exists the game and depending on your internet connection and what region of the world the server is you're connected to your online races can vary from perfectly fine to barely playable. Other players around the world also have the same issue and it does create some moments where the connection stutters and you're not in full control of the car. The devs had said this is one of the highest priorities to them for the next update so I would hope I can delete this part of the review in the near future.
Some other suggestions I have for the improvement of the game are:
- Being able to toggle ghosts on and off during practice and time trial
- Some more reverse courses of existing tracks that don't already have them
- Hexcode for paint colors so that it's easier to copy-paste the color you want
- More paint schemes for the cars, along with more designs for the driver's helmet and suit
- Some type of career mode for Offline play that offers a set progression and familiarity for players instead of just chucking multiple options at players and overwhelming them
- Different cars for the same categories, example would be the Porsche expy in GT being able to be changed to a Ferrari, Mercedes, or some other GT car expy with its own set of paint schemes available
