Bulletstorm VR Review (Patola [Linux])
Don't believe the reviews. This game is good.
It does not have bad graphics
The graphics are in VR, which means it draws in a much higher resolution canvas and two times for each frame. So the graphics aren't "remastered" as for today's standards. It's just the same graphics as the 2017 version.
The game is not too expensive
PCVR is barely profitable nowadays and even the main gaming industry had a rough year, with more than 10,000 layoffs in 2023. So there are less copies sold, and that effect is stronger for VR. The only way for developers to turn a profit is with a slightly increased price, USD 40 in the US version as opposed to say USD 30 for a game like this. If you want to continue playing PCVR games, if you want them to keep being released, that is the price to pay, sorry.
The game doesn't have bad mechanics
Simplified, yet. But not bad. You can still use completely manual reload by setting it on the options, and your hands fortunately don't pass through objects (and there were people complaining even about that in the forums!), the rest if kind of standard VR mechanics with agile, fast movement (no head bobbing).
There are a few quirks, nothing unreasonable
As for the release version, there are no graphics options. Also for the Valve Index there a slight misalignment of the weapon, say 20 degrees, nothing game-breaking and you can easily get used to it. There's nothing essentially broken that can not be fixed by a patch/
Spoiled brats are trying to make this game un-purchasable
Why are there such toxic people like this? We already have few and shallow games in PCVR and these people are trying to bury the good, full-size 10-20h campaign games under bad review scores. The same thing happened to Seeking Dawn which is a spectacular VR game. I bought this game out of curiosity due to the bad reviews and played enough of it to see if the bad opinions were right, and they're not. I have more than 400 VR games and I have a minimal idea of what makes a VR game good, and this one certainly isn't in the bad ones. For the moment it's just a bit clumsy.
Censorship? I don't think so.
Ok, this game has been under the accusation of 'censorship' of its content, full of curse words and controversial jokes. But even the people who accuse them of that can't find the pattern, noticing that there are strong dialogues that were not removed. I am highly critical of actual censored games like the recent remake of Resident Evil 4, but I think it's not the case here, they just wanted to make it more concise to better fit the nature of VR (in which long expositions are less tolerated). It's not that the game went woke or anything, it did not lose its character relative to the pancake version, it's just that for some long and awkward sections you get an abridged version.
Support the developers of good VR games. Buy this game.
Not much else to say at this moment, but don't get swayed by the haters and capricious negativists. Support PCVR.
This game is not nauseating and has good performance
I do not have a fps gauge constantly on in my overlay because I find it to be distracting, but I can guess this game was running at smooth 90+fps at all times because I didn't feel any discomfort or nausea. It helps that apparently the game has adjustments to always keep you on balance.
UPDATE: A friend of mine with a configuration close to my own (Linux too) but with a NVIDIA RTX 2080 said he had a bad experience, with 35 fps on the title screen where I got 130 fps there. So I think YMMV, buyer beware.
This game works perfectly on Linux
Maybe that's why I didn't have any crash? :) Lol. Will send my protondb report after this review and I'll be sure to update it as I play the game. My equipment: Archlinux, Valve Index, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Radeon RX7900XTX. Cheers!
