I enjoyed playing this game. I do recommend it. However, I also understand why it's currently sitting on a Mixed Review status. This is an underwhelming port of a beloved classic. At the end of the day though, I do think it's a competent port. If you're a fan of Bulletstorm, it's a new way to enjoy it. If you're not a fan, it's still something different than the usual VR shooter.
The main thing about this game is that it's a skill shot challenge romp. You'll want to get creative in the different ways to cause maximum carnage. You have an energy leash, kicks, slides, charged shots, and environmental kills that lead up to a hundred different combos to kill enemies. This is the fun part of the game and you get rewarded for being creative.
However, the translation to VR just feels a bit off. Weapon handling is not that good. The visuals just do not pop in VR due to poor lighting and poor textures. Enemy AI is dated. If you try to play this game like a normal FPS, you'll find several enemies feel like bullet sponges. You'll also probably run out of bullets.
The worst sin though is that this game has deleted scenes or shortened scenes and those baffling decisions lead to the pace of the game feeling off. Listen, I don't care about the censorship part either way. I think people upset about that have got problems in their lives that I don't have the time to get into. In either event, many scenes were added back and there's now a toggle in the settings to turn on or off the censored parts or the gore in the game.
Game is running on the Unreal Engine 4. On my RTX 3080, I was getting mostly 90 fps on mostly high graphical settings. I do recommend turning up the brightness as the game is too dark otherwise (at least on the Meta Quest 3). I also turned down contrast a bit. I recommend manually toggling resolution scale from Steam VR as well. You have full locomotion and teleportation available, along with smooth or snap turning and handedness. All the settings, except resolution scale, are there. You can play comfortably seated.
Rate 6.5/10. It took me 6.5 hours to beat the game, so you may want to wait on a sale.
I bought this game! If you enjoyed my review, please consider joining my Steam Curator group Oculus Rift Reviews.
