Botany Manor Review (Casperr)

Botany Manor is a lovely little game. But it really is little. It took me around 3 hours to 100% it minus a few achievements for solving puzzles wrong in humourous ways, and I was by no means rushing. For more context, the demo is 20% of the game.
For the very short play time and little-to-no replay value, I do think the £22.50 standard price is a bit steep. Chants of Sennaar is £5 cheaper and gave me 3x as much play time, if we're looking at pure price-to-play-time metrics of course.
With all that said, what little time I had with the world of Botany Manor was a truly wonderful experience. The game is one of those ones where its value doesn't come from any particular component, but instead how all those components come together. The graphics and art are simple, the story/world building is reasonably shallow, and the puzzles are well designed but unlikely to pose much of a challenge to anyone who's ever played a puzzle game before...
But experiencing all those things *together* really makes Botany Manor greater than the sum of its parts. The graphics aren't breaking any boundaries, but the visuals along with the soundscape *do* excellently capture the mood of a quaint summer's afternoon at a grand countryside mansion. The occasional newspaper clippings and letters dotted about also help present information and context for the player character that the conclusion of the game has a nice emotional punch to it. And together those things gave me enough motivation to want to work out how grow my lovely puzzling plants beyond just solving puzzles for the sake of it.
So I would really recommend this to a prospective buyer only if *the whole package* appeals to you. If you're here entirely for brainteasers and intend to plough through without any particular care for the environment the game is set in then this probably isn't for you.
Personally, I loved it. Although I do think it should be cheaper or, preferably, longer.
