Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King Review (Dr. Death)

This is a VERY soft "no".
I once read that indie devs are so entrapped in thought about their love for old classics that they try to recreate those classics, failing to catch the spark, and creating an amalgamation of the product made by their love for the original game, not by their ideas to make the same game but better. The end result is a game that only makes you think "Man, this game is fine, but i really wish i was playing the original".
This is what Blossom tales did for me. Its really fine, really, nothing mechanically wrong with it beyond some weird balancing quirks, but the entire time im playing im like "This is like a clone of zelda. A GOOD clone, but just a clone of the legend of zelda."
Its got none of the soul, the magic, the details, it instead has a faked pixelated artstyle with modern style shadows and lighting that meshes very weird with the high quality sprite rotating and pixel-perfect movement of the character against the obviously low res world and artstyle, the music is fine but its not the same amazing music that the inspiration for the game had.
Its "good", but when its up against "amazing", is "good" even good enough? Games dont fight for an equivalent price anymore but for an equivalent enjoyment across the time they take for complete. We dont take the value of a game in their monetary worth anymore but in how much fun they are to play and how long they take to play, and i think in that regard this game is just not that good, my time with it was not that fun and the game isn't really that short either to warrant a full playthrough or a 100% playthrough when there are better games of its genre out there.
I can just hope that the sequel is better.
