Blossom Tales 2: The Minotaur Prince Review (RaefGall)

I’ll start by saying if you liked the first Blossom Tales game, you’ll probably like this one. However, like its predecessor, if you’re looking for something new, this might not be what you’re looking for. That being said, if you’re looking for a short, sweet game that applies the classic Zelda formula of exploration, puzzles, collectibles, and dungeon crawling, this might be right up your alley.
The game features a cute frame story, with a grandfather telling the story of the Minotaur Prince as a sort of parable to his two grandchildren. It’s full of references to classic games and movies ranging from Zelda (obviously) to The Princess Bride and Labyrinth, but it doesn’t lean on them too heavily. It’s just enough easter eggs to give people who grew up playing Zelda a sprinkling of nostalgia, while still being accessible for a younger audience that might not understand those references.
The graphics and music are good, stylized and retro while fitting the tone and world of the game. The gameplay loop generally feels good, although on occasion the collecting and exploring felt a little tedious this time (I’m looking at you fishing mini-game). The special items and potion system added a lot of new little features, especially the teleporter, which proved to be one of the most unique items I’ve seen in this kind of game.
As with its predecessor, Blossom Tales 2 is short, not particularly challenging, and follows the Zelda formula in a predictable way. If you’re looking for something new, this one might not be for you. If you are looking for something to scratch that classic game itch, or you’ve never played a Zelda game and are looking for a starting point, this game is a great fit.
