Bloodroots Review (Otto)
I really wanted to like this game. It's identity and the ost are genuinely good. The story isn't that deep, but it is more complex than it initially seems. But the reason I dislike this game is rooted (see what I did there?) in what is arguably the most important aspect of this genre of games... the gameplay sucks. It has a good base, but the level design is extremely linear, which takes away all the fun of trying other strategies because the game makes it very clear what you should use for what. And when you don't, you fucking die. Ironically, the best levels are exclusively the first ones. I know it sounds like a skill issue, but trust me, I would still play the game if it was hard in a challenging way, and not in an insufferable way. It is truly a sad case of a game that didn't harness it's full potential.
