Blood Bowl 3 Review (Rogue77)

I loved blood bowl 2. I always wish it had a lot more in it, but the cinematics, atmosphere and models were all very nice. I waited on blood bowl 3 after release. I know they simply had a timeline and rushed the release out. I waited around until I starting hearing better things coming from the community. Glad I did tbh, bc I didn’t want the game ruined for me. Meaning, buying the game and being so disappointed in it that I’d never return to it.
So, a couple of weeks ago I went ahead and picked it up. I’m glad I did. The game is pretty good. There are things, of course, that still need fixing, adjusting and that sort, but I’m confident now that this game will move forward. I haven’t hit any game breaking bugs, in fact I’ve only ran into a couple so far (field stayed gray for some reason for the whole game after the first turn) but they were minor overall.
I’m not a fan of the ladder system in general, or as any type of competition system metric, but I am a fan of the way you “earn” the blood pass using that system. It gives a real feel of accomplishment while you play IMO. I didn’t think I’d like it at first, but after playing awhile it really feels like I’m progressing to earn something. Which is nice, I like it. I’m always very glad you can just outright buy whatever it is you want without worrying about it as well, if that’s the way you want to go. You can "earn" the things you want or buy them, whichever works best for you.
I like the new rules, menu screens and all the various pitches, dice etc.. something blood bowl 2 needed desperately, IMO. I like all the current teams, as well as, the look of them overall. I haven’t had any disconnects during play and compared to blood bowl 2 it is much faster (not the game, the response time) and seems to be on better servers. I have enjoyed playing a few teams so far, and I’m hopefully on my way to earning the season 2 blood pass, which would be cool.
I wish the ai would be improved. They are horrible to say the least. I know ai would be the hardest thing to code for in a game like this, but jeez, they need work. I’m confident this will be done as time goes by though. I like to play ai sometimes and it would be more enjoyable if they were at least competent. I also HATE how fast the ai rolls dice. For gods sake, slow it down! It’s hard to even know what’s going on when playing them. Tbh, it’s a multiplayer first kinda game, so that’s what you’ll get right now. I doubt the ai will be looked into for some time.
I also wish, or maybe I haven’t found it yet, there was a way to play previous seasons or at least a way to make progress in a season and save it so you could come back to it later, after the season has ended, and keep earning it until you have the pass for them. Anyway, a small gripe I guess overall.
I suppose it’s in the works but custom tourneys I can’t wait for. So hopefully that’s well in the works. The different colored dice are cool, but you cant always easily see the results. To me, these kind of games should be functional first, then go for looks. If you cant tell what you rolled right off it costs you time and really the functionality of the game should be first. Mute the colors, I dunno, but somehow they all need to be easily readable.
There’s also a lot of complaints about the money milking situation. In all honesty, they have to make money and some of the things that cost are things people wanted in the game. So they put them in the game, cosmetics and things like that. I don’t mind paying for something if that’s what I want. You definitely don’t have to and I never felt I needed to. It’s not glaring out at you is what I’m saying. I hope the game keeps getting those types of things bc I wouldn’t mind “pimping” my favorite team out, etc.. I believe it’s fair and just business. You want it, pay for it. I dont mind games that have 50 dlcs (EU4) bc they are there if you want them. The more the better I say. My two cents.
Anyway, just wanted to leave a review that the game is good. I have had a lot of fun playing so far and look forward to more. It still has a few issues here and there, but overall, it’s a great game and I’m glad I went ahead and picked it up now.
