Blood Bowl 3 Review (hughsebio)
I held off buying BB3 due to the absolute disaster the game was on launch, and for a long time thereafter.
To put that into perspective, i have literally thousands of hours on BB1 and BB2, but had no faith in the devs to fix this game to a workable version in a timely manner... but i think they have now got there 18 months after launch (not timely).
I can honestly say that i enjoy this version game, so they have turned it around and credit for that.
Its not perfect tho and has some issues still -
- Not a fan of the UI. It feels like it was designed for a console rather than a PC, surely most players have always been on PC.
- I dont like the micro transactions - but you dont need to use them thankfully as it is mainly customisation options or different races. I dont really mind the newly released races being there if you want to short cut to them. You can unlock the newest races on the season pass (these look like they can be earned by playing X matches over the season), but this is only the races that are ongoing - you have missed the woodies, necros, lizards etc and now you will have to use the in game store to buy them.
- There are zero customisation options when you start playing, but you can unlock some of these by playing and levelling up. I am not a big one for customisation but it is very off putting to a new player to be faced by a pay wall like that.
- Offline mode does not exist. I tried to play offline twice, but each time the game glitched and would not advance to the next day. Online was fine tho and let me play against the AI to get used to the new rule set.
- Oh boy... the AI... it was beyond terrible. If this is what AI is capable of, our jobs are safe. For example, in one match the AI had a ball'n'chain - it proceeded to roll all the way to its own endzone over a few turns (away from my 3 lineman set up perfectly for it) using GFI's and rerolls to get there... and then keep going right out the back of the endzone too. It succeeded with the bribe and got it for a second drive.... and did the SAME thing... while using all of its clock timer to do so. Mental. It regularly used ever second of its timer for other nonsensical decisions also, matches against humans are probably faster due to this.
Despite all that, i have recommended this game.
There are good bits too - Online play does seem to be better to me. i found the matchmaking smooth (i am at low TV tho), no glitches so far (online) and it does seem to me that the online matches are a little faster than BB2.
Blood Bowl is an amazing game and i think this does fairly showcase it... finally!
