Black Skylands Review (TurboTokkie)

6/10
I am a skyship addict. I bought this game because I saw it had skyships. Though I admit I had my hopes up higher than what the game ultimately offered. I felt like the gameplay out of the skyships had more to offer than the skyships themselves. The most fun part of the game was ultimately using your grappling hook and platforming, and after that the on-ground bossfights, and only after that the skyship content. The game was also shorter than I would have liked. I've basically done all there is in the game except finding the last collectables.
Difficulty-wise, I played it on hard and that was a nice difficulty for me. Though I suspect the game might feel a bit easy for veterans of the top-down 2D RPG's, because I'm not particularily good at them, and it only got hard when there were a lot of minions on the screen. The bosses were very fun, but not difficult. THough this seems intentional. The whole game feels like a casual game
Pros:
Really cool artstyle
Nice on-ground weapon variety that can be adapted to your playstyle thanks to a satisfying weapon mod system
The additional powers you get besides the weapons are also cool and can satisfyingly save you from a pinch or make you feel like a god, balanced out by their long cooldowns
Cons:
Skyship content is not enough.
-> Enemy variety was rather low.
-> Its only ever difficult when there are a lot of enemies on the screen but there is no single 1v1 fight you can't beat with relative ease.
-> Straight from the get-go you can essentially beat everything with your skyship, only held back on higher difficulties by the fact it just takes a while to kill the opponent due to low damage and large healthbars
-> Map feels small, made even smaller by the fact you can fast travel to all fuel stations. However, due to the way inventory management is setup, you have to go back to fuel stations a lot just to drop stuff off, so its just a bother
My recommendations for the game:
-> More skyship stuff. Let me control a ship bigger than a one-man vessel. Expand the control of the fathership. Expand the upgrading system of the father ship, instead of just "hey you can upgrade your weapons to a higher level now", allow the fathership to be really changed up a lot mechanically. I'd also like a larger map
-> The enemy ship that has broadside cannons similar to yours is the coolest enemy to fight in the game. The rest is honestly far less fun
-> Those large ships that appear to be taken over when you clear them out, they just despawn. Expand the possibilities there. Can you keep the ships? Can you command them?
Otherwise, a decent 20 hours
