Black Skylands Review (Morte tha Talking Skull)

First let me say that I have more than 5 hours in the game because I played in offline mode. I would guess I have closer to 15 or even 20 hours. This game is one of those you wish there was a middle option. The game would get a middle review from me because of its potential but a thumbs down in its current state because I kinda doubt they will fix some of the issues I and a lot of other people have. But lets start with the good!
The game is fun to play and has a great concept! I really enjoy that you can customize your weapons, town, and ships! I also think the combat at its core can feel great too!
But that's about where to positives end. As you can see from the other reviews, the writing is flat-out BAD. It is not one of those "so bad it's good" or even just "really generic and boring" its allllllll over the place and cannot decide what it wants to be. It tried to be funny and serious in a way that does not make sense, flow, or fit. The game also has a LOT of typos. And I am not talking about little things, I'm talking about horrible errors that can confuse people and conversations that do not sound natural or even understandable at times. Some of the characters are completely unlikeable when they are not supposed to be. The game can't even decide how it wants the player to feel about the villain or the protagonist's own family. The game is surprisingly story-focused and I can't help but feel that it would be better if it was much more of a sandbox that dropped the story, but you absolutely need to pay attention to the story to progress and it becomes hard to try and ignore it.
Next, the gameplay systems. As I mentioned the game has a lot of customization of your gear, which is neat and fun to mess with......but at least for the on foot weapons it feels like the attachments and new weapons do not make much of a gameplay difference. The combat can start to get a good flow but the map design and enemy AI is fairly bad to the point that it takes away from that flow. It really sucks because I am not one to typically knock points for those things but they are done so poorly that even I noticed.
I WANT to like this game SO bad but it just misses the mark so slightly in so many areas that it ends up missing the mark by quite a bit because those little things combined make it feel bad in every area. From what I have seen just about everyone wishes it was just *better*. its so hard to explain and sounds silly that these things bring the game down to an unenjoyable point but they somehow truly do. I like to think that I am a pretty easy-to-please and not picky gamer so it takes a lot for me to be like "dang that sucked" but this was one of those times. A TON of my favorite games are in the 5/10 to 7/10 range and this isnt even one of those. It *could* be one of those buts its below average which truly pains me to say.
